What would Captain Kirk do about world peace? Join me at ?Lisabeth?s Space? where I ponder the question!  |
Since world peace seems to be hanging by a thread these days, I got to thinking what Captain Kirk would do in such a precarious situation. As ToolPackinMama points out on the board ( See the thread ?KIRK WOULD GIVE PEACE A CHANCE?), Kirk would emphasize peace, love, and unity above all else. Given these qualities, it seems as though he would emphasize peaceful negotiations as long as possible. Captain Kirk would turn to force only if he had no other option but to defend himself, his beloved friends, or helpless victims from a vengeful enemy. Even then, Kirk?s ultimate goal is to preserve friendship and emphasize forgiveness and compassion for his enemies.
As far as fictional characters go, I think Kirk is an exemplary figure, complex and interesting, holding the best humanistic qualities close to his heart at all times. Are there any other fictional heroes you can think of that do the same thing? Some other interesting fictional heroes I can think of are also trying to preserve the peace. For example, Frodo from ?Lord of the Rings? tries to get rid of the Ring of Power to preserve Middle Earth from the Enemy?s evil control. My favorite female character, Ripley, from ?Aliens? is clear that she is ?not a soldier? when the story begins, yet is driven to fight the alien at the end in order to save herself and her ?daughter? from certain death.
All these characters seem to share a common thread ? violence as a last option. Of course, life as a fictional hero is a lot less complicated than life as a real human on planet Earth. I guess there is no answer that we can look to as a definite example of the way we should act. Our fictional heroes give us clues, though. After all, they have come from our writers? imaginations and we as readers and viewers have elevated them to public status. Maybe we?re trying to tell ourselves something.
Who are YOUR favorite fictional heroes and what do they stand for? |

I echo your comments on Capt. Kirk as a fictional hero. He was/is my favorite, hence I'm logged in to "WilliamShatner.com". Anyway it's interesting to note the importance that fictional characters have on the development of young people. As a child of the 70's and teenager in the 80's I watched and emulated the qualities of my hero. I believe this had a great impact on how I handle things now. Today I'm 37 and live in a corporate world, and even now when faced with a seemingly impossible challenge sometimes I find myself sitting back and thinking "what would Jim Kirk do" and funny as it may sound what he would do works.
The qualities of patience, diplomacy, courage, and compassion were well learned.
Thanks Jim.

As of the past couple years, I have to go with Special Agent Fox Mulder (The X-Files) as my favorite fictional hero. (still love Captain Kirk, though!) See, he searches for the truth, no matter how elusive it is, and has it been elusive for him, while at the same time looking in the stars and wondering what's out there. I personally identify with that being someone who does the same thing every chance I get. But that's the big difference for me between Kirk and Mulder and why I identify with Mulder more: Kirk made it into space, quite obviously. Mulder, at least for an incredibly long time and not by his choosing, didn't. Me, since I was five I wanted to go to space, and now, while I'm much older (26), I still think like that five year old. Only now I am sitting in a Physics class learning about my real life hero, Albert Einstein. That's the thing about heroes, real or fictional -- when you start wondering why it is your doing something, and you remember back to that hero. . . .you remember exactly why.

I admire him for the things that he does with charity. Things like the Hollywood Charity Horse Show, and helping to maintain Friendly House. Always being there for his family, friends, and fans. Bill is truly one of lifes unsung heroes and he means alot to me. Thanks for all you do Bill.

I would have to agree that Capt. Kirk would do everything he could to find a peaceful resolution to this situation. However, having served during the time of the Gulf War as well as playing a small part in the ending of the Cold War, I feel the need to remember that Hussein has murdered and terrorized innocents by the thousands in his own country, bombarded cities in Irian (although Iran did the same thing in return) invaded a small country strictly because they had more money than he did and threatened to invade Soudi Arabia. Then continued his militaristic policies by bombarding Israel and has a history of stockpiling, hiding and using chemical weapons on whatever target struck his fancy. As Kirk said to the Organians, "No one wants war" and as a veteran, I certainly agree. But how much longer can we as the greatest nation on Earth with the longest lasting and strongest democratic government committed to freedom from tyranny and oppression sit back and allow this man to continue his current course of action? We often forget the lessons of history such as when Chamberlain returned from negotiations with Hitler only to find himself in a war less than a year later.
As I said, I hope and pray that war never happens. I have two brothers still in the military as well as several friends with whom I served as well as a couple of young men I encouraged to join the military who are now on their way there. I pray for our leaders and even for Hussein to find it within themselves a way to end this once and for all without bloodshed. But I fear that if we find a "peaceful" solution now, we will have to fight a much greater threat in the future. Personally, I would love to hear the debate that would obviously occure between Kirk, Spock and McCoy on this one.

Liz,
Personally speaking, with the Wolrd Situation the way it is (Iraq, Afghanistan, Al Qeda, etc.), I think Capt. Kirk would be reacting and responding in much the same way as President Bush has so far. President Bush and Capt. Kirk are more alike than most people realize. You can only push these men so far. They don't stand for any horse pucky!! Wasn't Capt. Kirk refered to have used "Cowboy Diplomacy"? I suspect that with the Iraq situation that President Bush will go to war w/o UN Sanction and many Capt. Kirk remarks will be made about President Bush for this. How many times did Capt. Kirk go against Starfleet/Fedration mandates/resoulutions and acheive a better result? As long as we have our hero's, fictional or non-fictional, our spirit goes on and makes life easier to deal with. I often thought of my father as a "Capt. Kirk" kind of man. He was a hero to me. He very much believed in "Cowboy Diplomacy". I miss him. With the World Situation the way it is, I wish I could sit down and get my father's take on things. My father died of ALS/Lou Gerhigs Disease in 1999, which was later to found to be connected to chemical warfare exposure from the Gulf War of 1991. Many times I have sat and wished Capt. Kirk would swoop in with the Enterprise and take care of Saddam Hussien once and for all!!! When it comes to the Iraqi's I am much like Capt. Kirk was with his trust/distrust of the Klingons. Maybe I'll get my wish soon and Capt. Kirk will shine through President Bush.

Haven't we been attempting to live in peace with this guy for 10 years? The fact that he's broken every treaty placed on him by the United Nations is reason enough to oust him from power. In my opinion (is a conservative Republican's opinion allowed?) Bush has been WAY too nice. And don't even get me started on the last president.

I to would like to see a Kirk roll model (many Kirk?s) in our UN. Fictional characters (i.e. superheroes) are nice because there?s always a happening ending in one way or another. The writers behind the actors should not be forgotten. Fictional characters are more straightforward to create and what I mean by this is, there?s *usually no more than two writers creating a character(s) within a story line. However, realistic speaking there are more than two writers running our world.
Many minds clash on many political issues, religion concepts and economical resources. If we can all agree on one issue, ?It?s all about the Children? then, maybe our decisions will be wiser.

These characters are tough guys, they get things done that we as ordinary people cannot. In many cases they break laws and do it their way. They work as individuals, they do it heroically, for principle, and in the end, the bad guy loses, and as a whole, good generally triumphs over evil.

Thanks, Liz, for posting your comments about peace. I totally agree. As for the comparison someone else made of President Bush to Captain Kirk, that's so out of whack. I admire Captain Kirk. I think President Bush is a disaster who will cost many lives by carrying on his family's feud with Iraq. I think it is more likely that a war will result in Iraq's using biological or nuclear weapons.

i have a very limited amount of people that i hold in that regard. although your father william shatner is one of them. but i don't make the mistake of placing him upon a petestial that he could do no wrong. for he is only a man.( but a very desirable one at that.
peter pan is also one of my heros, then theres roy rogers, william james, thomas edison, princess diana, sigmond freud and albert einstein. xena, hercules, gene autry, neil armstrong, and john glenn. this list could go on and on, but i believe the person i would most like to be like is Jesus... i want to walk in his footsteps...do as He showed us...to be like god. jesus was a most humble person and i know i can not do that, i will try, and in the trying is the effort that God requires of us, and so the father will bless us and lead us the way jesus took..

Yes, Kirk would try to find a peaceful way out, but let's face it - he was never afraid to use that phaser - set on stun, of course.
His likely solution? He and Spock would transport into Hussein's palaces, and Spock would use his tricorder and mind-meld abilities to ferret out the real Hussein from amongst his lookalies, while Scotty on board the Enterprise distracted the Iraquis by taking out the power all over the country. They would then stun Hussein and bring him back to face justice. Unfortunately, instead of tossing him in prison where he belongs, Kirk would probably end up stranding him on some distant world with a group of his closest followers, thus paving the way for GULF WAR II, THE WRATH OF SADDAM.
Too bad real life isn't like that.

Well, In my humble opinion, James T Kirk would take a Klingon Bird of Prey, Cloak on entering our defencive systems and beam all weapons of mass destruction from all rogue states around the world. Simple solution and includes nothing that Kirk hasnt done before, ie Break the Prime Directive!!!
But as for heroes, I think I admire people rather than hero worship them. I think the only hero, that actually exists, is the hero we have in ourselves. The hero that takes in billions of pieces of information daily and translates it all into coherent thinking and delivers ones individual thoughts to others!!
We are all our own heroes.........individually and as a race (human race). We strive to be a better race and hopefully dont blow ourselves up in the meantime. So the Human Race is my only hero!!!!
Thanks for reading my quick thoughts

Captain Kirk is, as all the heros of my youth were, a man who gave alternatives a chance before the last resort, combat. I grew up in an era of television role models, characters who exemplified the best traits of humanity. Roy Rogers, Sky King, The Lone Ranger, Superman,Captain Kirk, etc. These fictional characters were good, honesty, trustworthy, hardworking, fair and dedicated to the ideal that justice must prevail, no matter how strong evil is. In todays world, they would stick to their principles and give every opportunity for change to the opposition. They would also, though reluctantly, go to battle for the cause of good and to free people from suffering. I myself, am a retired veteran of the armed forces. I believe in all of the above, because those were the ideals that I was exposed to as a child. I find that as I get older, there are fewer people that understand the ideals that I knew as a child. I still however, have done my best to pass these ideals to my own children.

There are a lot of fictional heroes/heroines I like. My favorites would have to be Capt. Kirk (but of course)- for his charm and fairness, Capt. Picard- for his reliability and excellent decision making skills under the worst circumstances, Buffy- for her sense of humor and fashion in the creepiest of times, Xena- just because they threw in that her character was once bad and then she turns around despite all obstacles and does what is right, and Aowyn (LOTR)- because she first appears to be such a mousey thing and then can really kick butt when she has to. (I try to combine all of these characteristics together and become a super office worker every morning).
