"I'm working on that..." Well, Bill's always working on something, but this summer that phrase holds deeper meaning as it also doubles as the name of his lastest book which he wrote along with co-writer William "Chip" Walter. The official title is I'm Working on That: A Trek from Science Fiction to Science Fact and it's scheduled for an August 2002 release through Simon & Schuster's Pocket Books division.
As Bill related in our March 2002 newsletter, "I think it's going to be an interesting book...I interviewed a lot of people, a lot of great scientists, and learned a great deal. The idea of the book is to explain to you, in simple language - so that I can understand it - what all of these concepts are all about. I was interviewing people on the genome project when they were weeks away from mapping the whole genetic structure."
The Psi Phi website has some information posted on the book and says it welcomes readers to "Join William Shatner, the original Captain of the Starship Enterprise, on a journey to discover the people behind the future we will all share. In interviews with dozens of scientists, the inventions that will revolutionize our lives or make it possible to truly explore mankind's last great frontier - space - are laid before us."
The title of the book lays reference to what Professor Stephen Hawking said when he was shown the warp core on the engineering set of Star Trek: The Next Generation during the filming of the episode entitled "Descent, Part I."
On the heels of I'm Working of That is Bill's next Star Trek novel Shadowplanet by HarperCollins. The book is scheduled for a 2003 release.
Bill hinted that Captain Kirk will meet a whole new series of adventures in a trilogy of books based on "love in its various forms." In the first book of this new trilogy, Kirk's son will be older. Captain's Peril will pick up a couple of years after Star Trek: Preserver left off.
Here's a recap of the books that Bill has written to date:
