Showtime Premiere

Lisabeth's Space  What's it like at a movie premiere? When I'm with my dad, it's a wildly exciting event. We get out of our car and the flashbulbs go off. Walking down the red carpet, people are calling out from all directions. It's also a bit intimidating and pressured in that the cameras and people demand a response, and you have to have one ready.

What's it like at a movie premiere? When I'm with my dad, it's a wildly exciting event. We get out of our car and the flashbulbs go off. Walking down the red carpet, people are calling out from all directions. It's also a bit intimidating and pressured in that the cameras and people demand a response, and you have to have one ready.

All this happened at the premiere of "Showtime" on Monday night in Los Angeles. I joined my father and the rest of the Shatner family, and about ten other friends of ours as well. All in all, we numbered about twenty people. We piled into two limousines and went into Hollywood where the picture was screening at the Mann's Chinese Theater. We all climbed out of the limos and walked down the red carpet. My dad walked the "press line" where dozens of reporters all lined up waiting for the actors in the film to slowly make their way down the line. Each one asked several questions, so it took quite a while before we actually made it into the theater.

We did make it eventually, and we all settled in with our drinks and popcorn (okay, I admit it, the best part about a premiere is that the drinks and popcorn are free). The lights went dark and then the movie began.

Robert DeNiro and Eddie Murphy were wonderful, and after hearing about the antics on the set, I was curious to see which of my father's takes with them actually ended up in the movie, if at all. The audience seemed to have a great time - the laughs came in all the right places and there was applause at the end. Phew.

Then came the party, which took place in a club nearby. A band played and we ate chili and cornbread. All in all, it was a great time. We piled back into the limo and went home since we all had busy days ahead of us. My father's take on the whole evening? "That, my friends, is showbiz." He said.
