Springtime means flowers, Easter bunnies, and showers, but for my Dad, it also means The Hollywood Charity Horse Show. He spends a great deal of time organizing the event, which benefits, among others, Ahead With Horses, a charity that teaches children with disabilities how to interact with horses. The time spent with their hoofed friends improves these children's functionality to a remarkable and touching degree.
Every April I start thinking about how amazing this charity really is, and how powerful our connection to these and other animals really are. Without animals in our lives, many of us would find ourselves bereft. I myself am a big fan of cats, dogs, horses, big cats like lions and tigers, elephants, whales, and dolphins.
My sisters and I have had pets ever since we were little. My Dad started us out on goldfish and turtles. We shed many a tear when we were forced to face the inevitable - you guessed it, that funeral at sea that we gave to all our expired fish friends. Then we moved on to hamsters and guinea pigs. I have an especially vivid memory of a rat named Tarzan that escaped from his cage and into the garage. He would peer down at me from the beams high above whenever I would venture inside the garage. Truly, he scared the….out of me.
Our next venture into the animal kingdom was birds; specifically, parakeets and love birds. I don't think this phase lasted very long, as most of the birds, well, died.
I think our biggest successes came with our dogs and cats. My older sister, Leslie, had a dog named Taffy that lived for years and years. Even though she was supposedly spayed, Taffy managed to have a single puppy that we named Lucky.
As for me, I have always had a cat by my side. I loved my felines with all my heart, and would be devastated whenever one of them would die. I've been especially fortunate for the past decade, as I have had the same cats now for about twelve years. I've also added a dog to my menagerie. He's a boxer with an amazing amount of energy and an incredible sense of humor. He is such a gift; he makes me laugh in down moments, and is good for a thorough face bath whenever I want one.
My Dad, on the other hand, has always been partial to horses and Dobermans. He breeds American Saddlebreds and quarter horses, and has had a Doberman, or two or three, literally since I was born. I can still remember all the Dobies' names: Morgan, Kirk, China, Heidi, Paris, Royale, Martika, Sterling, Charity, Bella, and Starbuck. Phew! He has loved those dogs with a ferocity that is only matched by my love for my animals. We often get into a cat vs. dog debate, but now I'm on both sides of the argument since the addition of my dog! Oh well. It's one battle I'm happy to be confused about.

I feel like my animals keep me in touch with the natural world and what is really important about life - connection to all living things. I hopeanimals grace your life, too.
