My Dad and Charity
This last weekend was the Hollywood Charity Horse Show. Every year I marvel at how my Dad and his cadre of volunteers put on such an elaborate event. I know it takes a tremendous amount of dedication on all their parts to pull it off.
This effort on my Dad's part is really one in a long line of charitable contributions. Over the years, I know he's supported many causes, especially ones that benefit children, the environment, and the police. He has always had a tremendous sense of duty to the community, and rarely turns down a request to do some good.
In fact, I remember one dinner that I had with him where he was almost a full hour late. In true Shatner fashion, he zoomed up to the restaurant in a squad car, lights flashing. It turns out he'd been to a sheriff's benefit and was detained at the event. He was so concerned about the time, that he got one of the officers to give him a ride!
I think he got his values about charity and generosity from his parents, especially his father. I can barely remember my Grandpa Joe, as he died when I was a little girl, but I do remember how much my father admired him. Grandpa Joe is the standard by which I think my Dad always measures himself and us. If one of us girls does something off the beaten track, my Dad always mutters to himself, "my father would be turning over in his grave." Needless to say, I heard this phrase muttered in my direction several times over the years!
I know that my grandparents always regarded community as an important part of life. It was in their experience to contribute to the people around them. My father has continued their legacy in a very wonderful way. I am proud to have them as MY legacy, and can only strive to emulate them.
