The Shatners;The Next Osbournes?
Now that the TV season has ended, I've gotten a chance to catch up on some of the season's most memorable television events. I have to say that one of the most enjoyable for me has been The Osbournes. A friend of mine taped the entire season and let me borrow the tapes, so I got a chance to see all the episodes back to back.
I thought they were hilarious and I couldn't help watch it and think of my family. Ozzy, the self-proclaimed "prince of darkness," found himself in the most unlikely situations -- picking up dog poop, yelling at his kids for not getting up to go to school on time and scolding his wife for her extravagant shopping sprees. These moments contrasted sharply with his image - the man who has bitten heads off bats, dresses in all black, wears heavy eye make-up and dyes his hair flaming red. Somehow the man cleaning up after the dogs doesn't quite jive with the one mooning his audiences and swearing profanities every other syllable.
And yet;the situation seemed vaguely familiar. Somehow, this eccentric, hard-working, loving man seemed;like my father? Could it be that the "prince of darkness" had a life that was alarmingly similar to; William Shatner? Are the Shatners fated to become the next Osbournes?
Admittedly, the similarities are there. Ozzy performs in front of crowds, some of whom dress in elaborate costumes, comes from a working-class background and is not afraid of hard work. Ozzy has an individualistic, loud family that plainly adores him, yet manages to challenge his patience at times. Also, Ozzy has tons of animals running around his house and often times gets stuck cleaning up after them.
Similarly, my Dad has performed in countless theaters and large venues throughout his career. He has a loyal following of fans that sometimes dress in costumes and show up at his appearances at conventions. He has a rambling house with dogs running all over the place (and when we were little, you could find assorted hamsters, cats, and goldfish, too). He comes from a modest background and has worked hard all his life. He still takes out the trash. He even scoops up doggy poop.
Most of all, he loves his family with the same devotion that Ozzy has shown. Ozzy may be the "prince of darkness," but he clearly adores his family. He may not understand them at times (okay, most of the time), but he'd do anything for them. My Dad, too, shows the same devotion, even though he doesn't always understand why we do the things we do. He loves us anyway. And we love him right back, just as the Osbournes love Ozzy.
Face it - we may have a future as the next Osbournes. Who knows - a cameraman may show up at my door at any moment, asking to film my every move. I just might let him. Except for one thing - I refuse to dye my hair pink!
