June 11th is the anniversary of DeForest Kelley's passing away and I thought it only appropriate to comment on what this beloved friend and colleague meant to me. "Dee" was the epitome of a southern gentleman, with his manners, his sense of fairness and honor. I enjoyed his company enormously and it was a real kick to work with him. He had been in "the business" for years before I worked with him and he knew how to keep the tennis ball of performance bouncing between us.  |
I have many memories of him from Star Trek, some of which I've told at conventions. I have to admit I did love playing a trick or two on him. If you've heard me speak at a convention, you might have heard the story about the English muffin. Dee loved his ritual of toasting an English muffin for breakfast. One day, while his back was turned, I stole the English muffin out of the toaster and ate it before he could see me. When he went to claim his muffin, it was gone. I tried not to laugh at the look of consternation on his face. He put another one in the toaster, and turned his back, whereupon I promptly stole it again. He went back to the toaster, only to find it missing again. He saw me out of the corner of his eye and realized I still had the muffin crammed into my mouth. He pointed his finger at me and shouted, "Shatner, I knew it was you!" Choking on the bits of muffin still stuffed in my mouth, I shouted back, "Call 911!"
But Dee took my teasing well and always displayed a humor and kindness that made everyone love him so much. I visited him when he was in the hospital shortly before he passed away. Instead of succumbing to fear and resignation, what he wanted most of all was to make a western with Leonard and me! It was on that note that I left him and he left us a few days later. I've never forgotten how his optimism spoke of his true character, even in the most difficult and awesome of moments.
I will miss Dee with all my heart. Star Trek will miss him and his family and friends will miss him. I know you will miss him, too.
