Today marks the anniversary of a horrifying event that I and my wife along with millions of others watched on television one year ago.
When I was in Canada growing up, the United States always represented a goal to me: the challenge of coming to America and being successful as an actor. Moving around the country as though I belonged, which I did in my college year, hitchhiking from New York to San Diego, Seattle to Miami, and ultimately realizing that the United States of America was not only the greatest country in the world but was the most humane.
Every challenge that America faced she rose to meet and eventually overcome. What a marvelous and wondrous land this is. With it's emphasis on people, humanity, freedom and justice. And when America falls short it's because of people's inadequacies, not because of dreams and desires.
I feel the same way about September 11th. In our time, this is the greatest challenge. Where does the enemy strike next? Who will die? and how? Ominous questions, ominous fate, ominous future. And yet ?
