Dear friends,
Elizabeth and I were shocked to learn that an alarming number of wounded U.S. soldiers are not necessarily receiving adequate treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, one of the country’s most prestigious hospitals for our armed forces. Many of these brave people have been severely injured and their lives forever changed. It’s horrible to contemplate that they are not getting the class-A care that they truly need and deserve.  |
Instead of waiting for and hoping that the government will remedy the situation, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to do what we can now. The hospital needs several items for their patients—and we sincerely hope that you will join us in giving back to the men and women who have given so much for our country. Some of the things they need include:
Luggage
Electric Razors
Portable DVD Players
iPod's
Men’s & Women’s Summer Clothing (dress shorts & shirts)
Hair Trimmers
Sports Bras
Ankle Socks
Casual Polo-type Shirts
Gift Cards:
Walmart
Target
Macy's
JCPenney
Grocery cards
Gas cards
Pre-paid Visa gift certificates
You can send your items to:
Maurice McDaniel
Soldier Family Assistance Center
Walter Reed Army Medical Center
6900 Georgia Avenue
Room 3G04
Washington, DC 20307

Thank you for all your help and generosity. This is a great way to tell these brave people how grateful and thankful we are for them.

Even the smallest thing, like showing you care helps. That simple knowledge can give someone who is lost, in their own torment, especially after battle on a foreign land, something to hold on to.

That's extremely sad.If the govt wants their soldiers to fight the war, they need to be treated with the honor & respect they deserve. It's just like the attorney who is accused of contracting TB.Thanks for the info,Bill. It takes a village to raise a child.

Dear William Shatner and Liz,
We have met a couple of years ago at the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention I was the soldier in Class A uniform you came to and shook my hand while you were heading to do photos. Well I have been the Founder and Coordinator for Trek to the troops a ORg that brings Star Trek actors and Actresses over to visit with the Troops. This past December we had Walter Koenig at the Bob Hope USO at LAX to visit with 250 Marines. Just this year Trek to the Troops has Partnered up with Soldier's Angels. www.soldiersangels.org They put together Soldier Care Packs for injured troops. Also Specialized clothing for Burned SOldiers and Marines. They are based out of Pasadena. I have met with the founders would. I am sure they would love any ast that you and Liz would be willing to offer in support of the troops. They send these Kits to the Troops in combat Hospitals as well as Transitional Hospitals in Germany where they go before coming back to the states.
Also we are still wanting to feature you on a visit with the Troops. USO Director told me once that I can for sure get a tour if we were able to get Shatner on board.
Thanks,

Some of the stories of poor care have been blown out of proportion, but that said, Walter Reed was ill prepared for the volume of care they are required to provide. The center is slated for decommissioning with the BRAC realignment, but that's not a good reason for poor conditions and care. I applaud Bill for his efforts. As we are local to the center, we have taken several cases of houshold goods over for the use of those that are in need -- pots and pans, kitchenware, clothing and such.

As a 100% disabled veteran, I am grateful that you have directed your attention to the shameful conditions at Walter Reed. Walter Reed is just one facility in a failing Veterans Health Care System. There may be some stories that have been blown out of proportion, but that would be the exception, not the norm. I have toured over half of the VA Medical facilities in the continental US, and found inconsistent, inadequate, incompetent, and usually rude service. The best facilities can be found in the most affluent areas, (West Palm Beach, FL) and the worst in poor areas, (New Orleans). It breaks my heart to see the recent influx of young 18 and 19 year olds coming into the system. They are so young and despondent. No one should have to become limbless for greed.

Hi Captain! I own 1 of your videos- the one with the whale. When I was 8 years old I owned a costume of you. Still watching that same video! 'There be whales here!' I actually just found your site. I also enjoyed one of your books.
