After The Horse Show

Bill's Space  The Hollywood Charity Horse show was enormously successful; we had two thousand children who were fed and entertained and we had a wonderful party for the adults. Our silent auction seemed particularly successful as we had 230 items this year the entire charity aspect of the event was probably one of the more successful that we've ever put on. Once again, I have to extend my gratitude to the troop of volunteers that make the event possible. No one could do such a Herculean task on his own, and I know I certainly would not have been able to do it without these wonderful people. My gratitude to them is boundless.

As for the riding events, the turnout was enormous; there were several reining classes taking part in the competition, my class alone having 103 contestants. I've never heard of a class that big! It was very gratifying for me to be part of something that large, although my riding performance was less than I had hoped for. I made a few small mistakes, akin to a figure skater landing less than perfectly after a jump, but it was enough to lower my marks. I rode nine times in two days, and I had a good time as always. As far as getting higher marks, there's always next time!

Of course, my most gratifying moment was watching the kids from Ahead with Horses perform. As I've written before, years ago I saw them perform at the Equestrian Center and I was terribly moved by their brave efforts to better themselves. It was seeing their performance that inspired me to start the Hollywood Charity Horse Show in the first place; so seeing them ride again this past weekend was the ultimate moment for me. Congratulations to all of them - they are the real heroes of the weekend.
