Most of the people nominated for Emmys have to wait until Sunday, Sept. 19 to find out if they won. I was lucky enough to find out last Sunday at the guest star and technical awards dinner. |
I was so nervous and spent most of the time looking at the presenter?s mouth because at horse shows that?s what I do to see if the judge is going to say the number of my horse or not! So I was looking at presenter?s mouth to see if it would form the name ?William Shatner.? And much to my surprise and gratitude, he did! I felt such a sense of relief and a kind of a glow ? it was an emotional moment for me. I sat there thinking, ?This is an award people work their whole lives for.? Then I kissed Elizabeth, stood up, and said to the audience, ?What took you so long?? I got a huge laugh. I also said, ?I want to thank those of you who voted for me and those who didn?t. I also want to thank David E. Kelly. We have to find out what the ?E? means. And I also want to thank my wife, Elizabeth.? They applauded so long it was really something. The other thing I thought ? and I really mean this ? none of it would mean as much without the love of my family. But I finally understood what Sally Field meant when she said, ?They like me, they really like me!?  |

Bill, I just want to congratulate you o­n your win.
For any artist it's important that the effort that is put into a work is recognized, not just o­n the part of the audience, or the fans, but by peers.
This is an affirmation that your co-workers in Hollywood recognize that your performances are outstanding, that you have come to embody that which is best in the industry: perfection of performance, the understanding of nuance, and the ability to communicate to an audience.
Many people think that acting is easy. It can be. You can go into a studio, hit your mark, say your lines and that's all in a day's work. But much more than that, is creating for the audience, the feeling that the character is <em>real</em>, that they can identify with the character, that there is empathy and sympathy. Otherwise, it's just a waste of time.
I'm sorry that because of my location in space and time, I could not see your performances. Having been drawn kicking and screaming into fandom because of my obsession for Trek, I have appreciated your work for years, from the early days in black and white, up to the last performance I saw, the parody of Se7en. Marvelous.
I am proud to say that I am a FAN.

Dear Bill,
Many, many congratulations on your Emmy win! I was once surprised to find that I had won a film production award (one of only two people to recieve it) last year in senior year high school, so I'd like to think I have some idea of the enormous happiness and gratitude you must have been feeling that night :-) There is really no greater honor to an actor or filmmaker than to earn the recognition of their peers. I can't wait to see the ceremony on TV and even though I'll have known you won, I'll still be smiling watching you walk up stage and give your speech. I KNOW this will make "Boston Legal" and even bigger hit now that it has gotten recognition for its best actor/character. I expect to see you up there next year and beyond accepting the Emmy for male LEAD actor as Denny Crane :-) So once again, congratulations and enjoy your always continuing success!

I'm soooo glad Hollywood finally managed to make some time for you! I've told my friends for years that I believed you to be a great actor. You've shown up a lot of stalwarts and beat the old system that held on to typecasting, stereotypes, and pigeon-holing talent. An iconic sci-fi hero, character actor, dramatist and comedian! Mr. William Shatner - In my opinion you have always been a fine actor, from the first time I sat riveted, watching you o­n that Twilight Zone episode where you were sitting o­n that plane, knowing there was a monster o­n the wing, throughout all the terrific acting you have done up to the present day. I have always admired your acting style and wondered why you weren't rewarded by the industry you work in sooner.

You finally got the recognition you deserve for your career in films and television.I still remember you o­n Judgement at Nuremburg, the Andersonville Trail, Pray for the Wildcats, White Commanche, the years o­n the Twilight Zone, and Star Trek, as well as The Barbary Coast, and TJ Hooker. You are a great actor and your credits are a legend in film for the last 40 plus years.

Mr. Shatner (I'd love to call you Bill, but I just can't),
I've thought you deserved o­ne from Day 1 o­n Star Trek, and each time you appear o­n Television, you just o­ne-up yourself. Denny Crane is just an amazing piece of work for you. I hope you not o­nly stretch his comedic elements, but also his dramatic elements. Your handling, albeit briefly, of his possible Alzheimers, was truly brilliant. Please keep that up...give us the funnies, and give us, when it is time, the sads. You are o­ne of mankinds great treats. You are a person who knew what he could give to the world, and you went ahead and gave it. Encore, Encore! *(plus, your work outside Hollywood, with charities, and horses, and the two combined...that is also just a perfect touch to your PERSONAL career as a human.). Again, encore.

Congrads o­n the Emmy. I certainly hope it is the first of many. Anyway I have still yet to see some of the other shows that you have done...other then Star Trek. I am surprised that you didn't get an Emmy for "the squire of Gothos" which I personally think is o­ne of the best.

HOORAY! About time. Nobody can be the passenger in that Twilight Zone episode as well as you...all Star Trek movies are exponentially better when you're in the cast, AND you have the best sense of humor about yourself! I always love to see your face and hear your voice - even when you're singing :-) Congratulations! I don't know a single soul who doesn't love you.

As an actor, Bill Shatner reminds me of John Wayne or Jimmy Stewart -- easy to imitate, and not exactly Peter Sellers or Alec Guinness when it comes to disappearing into a variety of parts, but thoroughly compelling and delightful to watch. I don't know if it'll silence the critcs, but this Emmy is richly deserved.
Speaking of the critics -- what a risk Bill took with his new album! He could have gone the safe route by making the whole thing tongue in cheek, but there are obviously tracks which it would be impossible to pretend were meant just as goofs (as well as stuff that's flat out hilarious, and deliberately so). Anyway, the result is my favorite album since Johnny Cash's final effort.
I never thought of it before, but they're kinda similar, Cash and Shatner. Basically of the same generation (I don't know their ages, but they can't have been more than ten years apart in age -- even though Shatner looks 50 and Cash looked about 85 when he died... not that you'd think so to hear him sing). Both came of age before the 60's, but went on to be shaped by that era. Both a little larger than life, highly imitatable (and parody-able), even iconic... but able to laugh about it. Both became recognizable "personalities" outside their work, to the point where audiences think of them not just as peformers but as human beings, even friends. Both worked hard to avoid being pigeon-holed, took creative risks (and both fell flat a few times as a result, before ultimately triumphing). Both willing to expose themselves emotionally, revealing their private struggles to the public. Both came back into the limelight, surprising everybody by the revelation they were better than ever... I wouldn't carry this too far; Johnny Cash was Johnny Cash, after all, and there'll never be another like him!
But anyway, what an amazing double triumph for William Shatner!

Sorry to say I haven't caught your new show, been too busy while my kid brother is over in Iraq with the US Army, but I dig out the ole ST movies, o­n VHS, and pop o­ne in the player when I have the time to relax and enjoy watching some of my favorite space travelers.

Having been a fan of your work and sense of humor for many years, it was with great joy that I read of your winning the Emmy for your role as the one-and-only Denny Crane in BOSTON LEGAL.
I rarely join online sites, but am glad to have logged on to yours.
Last year you were honored at the Beverly Hilton by the Friendly House organization (an event which I attended) for your generous donations to set up their second facility. As a person in recovery myself, it was a great honor this past weekend to be asked to perform at Friendly House's Wilshire-area "house" on S. Normandie for their holiday Open House event... three hours of Christmas carols and pop tunes, one of which I played with you in mind: "Rocket Man," after having recently seen a bit of tape of you performing it at an event years ago.
To participate in a worthwhile endeavor such as Friendly House has been a blessing for me this holiday season, and I thank you for the help you've lent to their cause. I have several friends who have gone through there, or are there now, and FH's efforts are truly helping women get back on their feet after struggling with the disease of alcoholism/addiction.
Here's to 2005... hopefully another year of continued success, both personally and professionally.
