CORAL REEF ALLIANCE/EARTH DAY
Posted by: BillShatner on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 - 06:16 AM

Bill's Space  By now most of you know how much I love to experience life and all it has to offer. Most of the activities I love to do involve nature and/or animals. Skiing, kayaking, horseback riding, hiking, swimming ? I love it all. And I love the natural world that surrounds me.
One of my most cherished activities is scuba diving ? I love the ocean, its colors, and its varied sea life. I?ve been lucky enough to go diving all over the world ? Hawaii, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific. Even though I don?t have a basis of comparison for many of the places I?ve visited, I have been lucky enough to talk to the local people about the health of their waters. And they all say the same thing ? the coral reefs are sickly due to the effects of pollution and global warming.

Of course, this fact distresses me greatly. We simply cannot afford to lose our coral reefs since they provide so much in the way of food and protection for sea life. The health of the reefs, the ocean, and the sea life in turn affects us so this is really a catastrophe in the making.

Fortunately, there are ways we can help. One of them is by supporting The Coral Reef Alliance. The Coral Reef Alliance is a large group of people dedicated to saving the coral reefs of the world. Since the fabric of the ocean would be torn to such a serious degree, it is imperative that we make an effort to protect these reefs.

Another is by recognizing Earth Day on April 22. We can all take a moment out of our busy lives and do something ? ANYTHING ? for our environment. We can join a beach clean up or even just pick up trash off the street or a local park. The more we are aware of our environment the more we can do something about saving it.

I love this planet ? it?s oceans, it?s mountains, it?s plains. Let?s keep it clean so our children?s children can enjoy it, too!

hi Bill
i agree we only have one world ( at the moment) to live on and share and we need to realise that we do a lot of damage to it with man made pollution, and this needs to change as once the Earth's wonderful , natural, habitats, and along with them the local animals, fish and wildlife  are gone, and extint thats it and future generationsof humans  may not even get to see any of the creatures we have today.Theres a great site that also helps the enviroment and animals too its www.care2.com

April 22 is one day after my birthday, and I will celebrate by picking up soda cans and recycling them for the environment. I am planting tulip bulbs, Daffodills and other flowers in pots for the bees and humming birds inthe neighborhood. Thank you for doing so much for the Environment !!!

    Hi Bill,
I live in San Diego and me and my wife get to the beach as much as possible. She grew up here and I grew up more inland, we were at the beach a few weeks ago and she was very upset at how terriblely they've been kept up. She told me of times when she was a kid and walked those same beaches and how clean and nice they looked, now she was sick at just how terrible they were and how much trash was dumped on them. We will take time and go out to these beaches and do our part to help clean them. I support you on this 100%.

Hi, William. I agree that we should save our planet. The ozone layer is getting bigger, and our
oceans are definitely polluted. I am from Trinidad, West Indies and I find that our beaches are
so disgusting that most of us go to our sister island, Tobago. Also, in America, what we should
do( and not just on Earth Day) is to reduce the need to drive, and use public transportation for
a change because vehicles pollute the planet with its exhaust system.

    Gidday!

No doubt you will have heard about the great underwater robot the folk watching the Australian reefs have come up with: was on this morning's Australian news - channel 9.  It is an underwater version of the Hubble as it can stay underwater with nobody in actual control of it and keeps sending back photos and data, can move on its own and has no "use by date".  It is only "limited" by the fact that it can not ask and answer its own questions: it was designed to be able to keep a constant watch on the reefs and report all changes.

Thank you for caring about Earth.  But it starts on the land doesn't it?  one of my pet peeves is developers who go around the rules, graft or whatever, and build housing developments on floodplains.  When floods come taxpayers are expected to help the poor floodplain dwellers refurbish their houses.  Worst of all, the force of the flooding 4' and 5 ' deep inside their houses suctions the commodes and the sewer lines.  Receding flood waters carry the sewage and the sewage washes down our salmon spawning streams, killing wild fry, and of course, out it goes into the estuaries and oceans.  Our county permit-givers don't care and the developers don't care, so the battle is ongoing - do not rest.  Perhaps the battle is so difficult to keep our Earth pristine that people dream of distant planets where humans can start fresh....but then dear heart, who will ban the non-carers there?

Dear Bill (please forgive the no-doubt inappropriate familiarity),

Thanks for taking the time to stump for this important philosophy. Your participation is appreciated. It is a tragedy of the Humaan condition that it is so difficult to turn from limitless greed to enlightened responsibility, acknowledging our giri to the generations past and future.

By the way, I've just finished "Captain's Blood" and was very pleased. Not the typical cliff-hung partial story. Teaming with Gar and Judith (apologies again) is a great choice -- they're the best Trek writers I've ever found in an arena of talented contenders. I look forward to your next installment(s?).

    Happy Earth Day!
Thank you for those words of encouragement.  It is said that if everyone just did one thing to help the environment, like pick up a piece of trash or recycle their plasitc bottles, soda/beer cans or used paper then the Earth would benefit greatly.  Unfortunately, that doesn't happen, instead people think "nothing big will happen if I don't participate".

If everyone on who visits this site will take the time today to be aware and take the time to recycle, pick up just a little trash, walk or bike or take public transportation one day this week, the effects would be 'enourmous', in fact I bet if you listen carefully you'll hear a soft sigh from Mother Earth.

I plan on celebrating Earth Day by walking instead of using my car at lunch (It's too far to work or bike AND no buses run near I work (sigh), picking up trash, if I see any and make sure I recycle all the paper and soda cans & bottles I can for the rest of the year.  Anyone else with me?

Again, Thank you for the reminder and I pledge to do all that I can to make a difference. I only hope more will join me.

Last night, my partner and dive buddy, dived La Jolla Shores Reserve, Marine room, for Dive in to Earth Day 2004.  We regularly dive the LJS Reserve and always bring our goody bag to pick up trash.  Of course we have learned that sometimes the containers, bottles and cans, can become the home of octopus so we now carefully check for inhabitants before we remove them. I have been certified for three years and have done this official dive each year, as well as regularly clean up whenever I am out there.

I just wanted to stay that I agree whole heartedly with your comments on the Coral Reefs.  A year and a half ago I dived the coral reefs in Bali, at Tulabmen, near Amed. I was surprised to see that much of the coral was dying or not healthy.  Although the locals say it is due to the change in water temperature, we certainly saw large amounts of trash and pollution.
Unfortunetly part of the problem is the "westernization" of the rest of the world.  Until about 10 years ago, according to the locals, there was little to no non-decompostable trash.  Drink containers were coconuts, plates were palm leaves, toilet paper was, well you can take your choice.  They would throw all of this biodegradable matter into a compost heap.  Sometimes is would compost prior to being washed into the local bays and therefore reefs.  Now those same heaps are filled with plastic bottles and bags, paper plates, etc. but they don't compost or biodegrade before they are washed into the ocean with the next rain.  And just think about the TP issue.  It is not going through any kind of processing before ending up on or near the coral.

So I believe it is the responsibility of countries like ours, to not just bring the westernization to these countries but to ensure that we help them build the necessary infrastructures at the same time. If we also tackle this problem we will be helping save the reefs too.

    Barbara

I've been blessed to have April 22 as a birthday. I was born on the very first birthday of Earth Day (April 22, 1971). It's funny that I didn't even know about Earth Day until I was in my teens, but now I do what I can to help the environment. It's almost like a birthday present to myself, as life on this Earth is the most outstanding gift we are given. I hope everyone follows Mr. Shatner's advice and does something for the environment not only on Earth Day, but throughout the entire year.
