I recently went to Monterey to help raise some money for the Coral Reef Alliance. The effort to help save the coral reefs is very near and dear to me since we all depend on a healthy ocean for our very existence. It should be noted that the coral reefs are in danger of dying ? an unimaginable tragedy for everyone on the planet. Already there exists the possibility that all the large fish will soon be wiped out. Next is the smaller fish that live near the coral reefs and depend on them for their existence. A lot of people get their protein from these fish so one of the main problems to combat is over-fishing. Another is pollution. Combine these problems with global warming and we?ve got the potential for another tragedy in the network of life. Needless to say, the Coral Reef Foundation is trying to prevent this situation from happening through education and the creation of new coral reef systems. I?ve been an avid diver now for years. I?ve been lucky enough to see some wonderful underwater sights that I will never forget. I?ve been down far enough to see a shipwreck and have swum among dolphins. I?ve watched whales breach and sharks scuttle among caves. So much beauty exists for all of us in these oceans. My greatest hope is that these opportunities will still be there for my grandchildren when they are adults.   |

Dear Bill,
The East coast, ie Buzzards Bay, has suffered another blow in pollution with the oil leak last week. The area has been hurt by over-fishing as well. Perhaps, we should pressure the government to research other fuels so that oil need not be brought in tankers.
I do not dive. I barely swim. I do love the ocean and stand in awe of its creatures. Bravo for your involvement. Any suggestions?

Maryland Chesapeake Osters and Crabs are on the verge of collapse. We had a ban on rock fish and the rock fish are back. The Atlantic ocean is on the verge of Collapse in 5 to 10 years. People said it would never happen now all the big fish are gone. Most of the turles are gone now too.
So what helps clean the tributaries and bays? Well odly enough Oysters fill the roll of filtering water. Algae filters alot nitrates out but if there are too many nitrates in the water the water becomes choked with Algae, red Algae is called red tide. The oceans are being over fished. Eat less osters. we need a ban on Osters, tuna and probably crabs for about 5 years.
We can all help by throwing our trash in trash cans and keeping our cars tuned up. We dont need Emisions testing. Just have those leaks fixed. Cut those six pack ties up. Trash on the roads ends up in the sewers, tributaries and oceans. Pack it up.
It makes me sad people trash their home (Earth) but people do it all the time. Just take time to put a little effort into life and you will get more out of it. Apathy is like a social cancer. Dont feed social cancers like polution. Take the time to care about world around you and be a blessing to the enviorment. So the World can be a blessing to others.

Thanks for the comments onthe oceans reefs WIlliam. They are the life of the earth and if we wipe them out through the stupidity of pollution (which can be easily prevented - use a garbage can and recycle!!!!!) and over fishing then we are doomed.
My favorite song right now is Calypso from John Denvers' album "Calypso" It is about the work that Jac Cousteau did for oceanography and the wonders of sea life and beautiful photography he brought to us.
I would hate to see that destroyed!!!

dear bill, i have been worried about the environment for some time now. i heard on one of the tv channels that the earth is no longer round but pumpkin shaped. it seems to me that people should start doing more to keep our environment and its rich natural resources(and i am talking about earths' plants, organism, and atmosphere) from being destroyed. if i had a voice, or rather a choice, i would restrict people from destroying our earth...its not as if we have a second one to ruin. we cannot replace our ozone layer, although i would try to replicate it artificially if i were a scientist. and our seas and oceans are being polluted, and i don't just mean by garbage...most paper or litter disentegrates rapidly---well i guess i could go on and on about my earth. but i would take care of it thats for sure...take care bill, your friend rose.

Dear Bill As I have mentioned in previous comment, that I have been a ocean qualified diver too: I dived when the world was clean, the fish were plentiful, and the wonder of it all was sufficent for people to treasure what they had. (My last ocean dive was in 1989)
Here in Australia we are having a very hard job trying to preserve our Great Barrier Reef, BUT the commercial fishermen are playing merry hell, the oil tanker companies (foreign owned these days)are kicking up a stink for they will now have to travel outside the reefs and that takes more time,.Which means $s
So we have a battle on our hands.....But I along with other worried divers, swimmers and greenies are fighting hard.
There are two places on this planet that are unbelievable in their beauty "innerspace" and the top of a pristine mountain, in Antartica....I 'd like to fly into space but haven't quite got the few million $s required.
Good luck in Coral Reef Quest Bill. Regards Robyn from Oz

Hi Bill (My Capt. Kirk):
I'm so glad you are interested in saving the environment, specifically the oceans and rainforest... it's true as attested by so many that we are in danger of losing our precious environment.... there is no way around it....there is a price to pay for it.....maybe not now, but it will happen and then what...we mope around regretting our illogical behaviors? Maybe our next strategy should be trying to survive in a world we intentionally destroyed.....and yet, it's so easy to make little sacrifices that can help the environment and yet we are indeed apathetic.....I do my part, however small, but it feels good......I'm an avid swimmer and I love the oceans.....and it breaks my heart every time I see a trash flowing by.....it's so simple to put it in trash can, you know.....anyways, I wanted to let you know that it's great to see you care about the environment and I love you for that......thank you......Hugs, Seven of Nina

Dear Bill,
Ditto regarding your support and concern for our oceans and for all the wonderful creatures that reside there. I've only briefly had the chance to stand on the beach for just a few hours while I was in Florida, but the view of coarse was breath-taking. So, it's so consoling to know that you and others are out there to preserve and care for the awesome beauty of our oceans that is so vital to all of us. God willing, I'll have a chance to be reunited to such beauty again with optimism for it's future.

Dear Bill,
I just happened on this website by some fluke or maybe it was fate. You see I am a fisheries biologist who is six months from finishing my master's degree. Lately I've been depressed because it seems like I am up against a never ending battle, with so many things wrong in the environment and it seems like people just don't care. It lightened my heart to see that you do care. God bless you for that and keep caring the scientists in this world need people like you to care and to help us make the world a better place.

I had no idea this was such a big problem. I'll bet many others do not realize it either. I'm going to take this over to the main boards and see if together we can enlighten many more people. Thanks for the link. I'll be sure to pass it on to my friends and family.
