PROJECTS FOR THE NEW YEAR
Posted by: Admin on Tuesday, February 04, 2003 - 03:09 PM

Bill's Space What might the meeting between Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle been like? That's one of the questions I explore in one of my upcoming projects this year. Check out the rest of what I'm up to in Bill's Space.

Most of you have probably figured out by now that I like to keep busy. This year promises to be no exception. I?ve got some fun, interesting, and creative plans on the horizon. Let me share some of them with you?

I?m in negotiations about a thirteen-week series about scuba diving for Spanish galleons in the Panama area! Since Panama has not designated such sites as national treasures, laymen like myself can still get close to these sunken ships. It should be fascinating and great fun if it goes?

The second Spplat Attack paintball event is also underway. We?re beginning to work on the project, which is to take place over Labor Day. The Charity Horse Show is also coming up in April. I?m also busy doing publicity for the DVD releases of Spplat Attack One and Groom Lake. I?ve also got two scripts, ?Los Reliques? and ?Shiva Club? which I am trying to sell. But wait! I?ve got more! Don?t forget about the album I am doing with Ben Folds as producer!

But perhaps one of the most exciting projects I?ve got slated for this year is a play called ?Harry and Arthur? that I am to direct. The project developed out of an idea I had invented based on a meeting between Harry Houdini, the great magician, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the great writer. Although they had actually met, I fictionalized what happened during their meeting. That story became the basis of a book I wrote with my dear friend, Michael Tobias. We have now used that book as the basis of the play.

The invention that I had created was that Harry Houdini was the great debunker of spiritualism and that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was the 1920?s great spiritualist. The play is about the conflicts of their ideas, which is essentially the debate about life versus death. The play is three acts, takes place on one set, and has five characters in it. I am now in the process of casting those five parts and a reading of the play is to take place very soon. The reading will give us a better idea of what we?ve got on our hands and the direction we want to take with it.

I think I?ve got enough to keep me busy for a while! What do YOU think?

Hey Bill,

I read that book wjhen it came out and really liked it.

Especially Houdini's escape from under the ice covered river.

It had alot of power, I thought it would make an excellent mini series as well.

good luck with the play.

Keeping busy is one of the many ways we stay young. A favorite poem of mine is one that reminds me of my Grandfather who never grew old. He died at the age of 94.

Keep Some Little Dream In The Making,

Keep some little dream in the making,
It neither be big nor bold,
Just some little dream in the making,

    Hi Bill
I have been a fan for 25 years. I watched reruns of Star Trek and all of the TJ Hooker episodes. My mother and I were big fans. It was something we would do together. We would watch TJ and she would let me ditch school so we could go see the new Star Trek movies together. My mother bought me your books and I really liked them. So when I had the opportunity to meet you, I jumped at the chance. I just wished my mom had been alive to share this with me. She would have been so excited. As I waited in line my heart pounded and I was shaking. Here I was waiting to meet two of my favorite actors, (you were there with Leonard Nimoy). I finally got to the table, I could hardly believe it, and what happened? You BOTH WERE VERY RUDE! You guys didn't even acknowledge my presents. I tried to say hi but you didn't even look up. I was so disappointed. I am so glad my mother wasn't there to see that she would have been more broken-hearted than I was. We all heard what Leonard said. If I hadn't heard it with my own ears I don't know if I would have believed it.
But every cloud has a silver lining. It took me awhile to decide but I finally sold all my Star Trek stuff and your books. I want to say thanks for being an ass. I made a lot of money. I have two less people to spend my money on.
Why am I telling you this? I don't know it's not like you care. Maybe it will make you think and you'll be a little nicer to the next person. Probably not. What's one less source of MONEY?

There is an organisation in South Africa, where I grew up, that is in need of help. The HIGHVELD HORSE CARE UNIT, affiliated to the NATIONAL THOROUGHBRED TRUST needs donations to stay open. Not only do they rehabilitate and rehome numerous horses, but they help, educate and give veterinary treatment free of charge to those who can't afford it. As you will know, it takes a lot of money and effort to keep an arganisation like this going, and as far as I am aware, recieve no government funding. I appreciate that there are many needy and deserving charities out there, but this one is very special to me.
I am not asking you personally for a donation, but if you know of anyone who would be willing to make even one small donation, I am sure it would be appreciated.
If you would like to visit the website, the address is : www.horsecare@icon.co.za.
The plight of these animals desrves to be taken seriously, and it is not only Thoroughbreds that the unit takes in. They have ponies, donkeys and even a beautiful Percheron Stallion called Hercules in their care. He was confiscated from a Government owned Stud Farm, which has since been shut down due to the conditions that the horses where kept under. I implore you to help me keep this unit going. If you know of anyone that would be willing to help me in this struggle, please tell them about the unit.

There is a large association of professional magicians and historians who already wish you success on the Houdini project. Magic consultants like myself as well as Houdini collectors would like to contribute input & provide authentic replicas of Houdinis paraphernalia.
Should you consider a TV series venue, the magical aspect interspersed within the paranormal would provide crossover interest for magic fans. There is also concern as to how much revelation of magical methods would be necessary while telling the debunking aspect of Houdini/Doyle.
Walter Gibson aka Maxwell Grant (friend to Houdini) always talked of a dramatic magic play using the Doyle/Houdini connection. Gibson was particularly fond of a play called "the Spider", where a magician claiming spiritual powers was debunked by the audience. Gibson and I discussed production of the old play before his death.
Related to the Gibson subject: Magical author and gambling magician Sidney Radner toured the college circuit with Gibson druing the 80's discussing Houdinis escapes (Radner has a great Houdini shackle & lock collection as well). It would be nice to have some input from experts like him as well.
