This may have already been a topic of conversation, but since I missed it (if it were a topic of info) I'm going to bringit up again...

We are all aware of the new Special Edition DVD's coming out. Most of us probably own them (Motion Picture- Star Trek III) already. In my opinion, the new DVD's made watching the movies I had already seen a million times fresh and new again. I saw the biggest change in the Motion Picture I think.

I remeber in some interview or another that Mr. Shatner said he would not be working on or backing Star Trek V's re-release. This made me slightly upset. I know many say Star Trek V was the worst of the series. Graphically, yes. "Some" of the lines in the film were wiered and a little offbeat. However, it potrayed the relationship between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy in the best way. I always felt that the movie was about those three and their relationship, and that the search for "God" was a subplot.

One of the things that draws me most toward Kirk and Crew more so than to the other crews on other series is their relationships. I have a best friend. Actually, he's more like a brother. I'm closer to him than anyone (human) I've ever know. We've known each other for over eight years. We depend on each other for emotional support. If I don't talk to him at least once a day, I don't feel right going to sleep at night, and he feels the same. People say are relationship is'nt right. They accusse us of being homosexuale. There is nothing gay about what me and Andrew have. We're just extreamly comfortable with each other. We're brothers.

Anyways, about four or five years ago, I was over at Andrew's hanging out. We went on a walk to just talk to one another about life and whatnot. We came to a park where there were a couple of kids fishing. Andrew, being the social person he is, went over to see what was going on. I, myself, am very anti- social. I can talk to strangers if its business related just fine, but I can't go up to someone and just start talking. He was overthere talking when one of the kids caught a fish. They realed it out and put it in a bucket. Then Andrew, along with the two kids, did something that not only discusted me, but shcked me as well. A kid pulled the fish out of the bucket (and keep in mind that I cant hear whats going on because I'm to far away. I can only see) and Andrew picked up a fallen stick. The kid threw the fish to Andrew, and my friend hit it out into the lake like a baseball with a bat. I looked at him while they all laughed. I wanted to throw up. Now I'm no animal rights activist or vegetarian. I eat meat. I like meat. But cruelty to animals is not right. The Bible and God give man the right to rule over animals and to consume them. But it tells us to be wise and not to waste food, like what Andrew did.

I stormed off in a fit of rage. Andrew saw and came running after me. He wanted to know what was wrong and I told him. He was completly obliviouse to what he had done. I told him that I did not want to ever talk to him again. And I did'nt for over a month. He tried repeatedly to contact me, but my heart was stone. I felt very alone at that time. I had no one to talk to. I had pent up feelings and rage. But I was not going to talk to some one who was so cruel.

One evening I was bored so I poped in STV. I was watching and enjoying the film. It was near the end of the film. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy were standing by the window thinking cosmic thoughts. Then they said something that did not mean to much to me in previouse viewings:
Spock: I have lost a brother.
Kirk: I lost a brother once... [He looks Spock in the eyes] I was lucky to get him back.
McCoy: I thought you said men like us don't have families.
Kirk:[To both]...I was wrong.

That scene said something to me. It told me that I to had lost a brother. I knew this from the great loanliness I felt. And it told me that I was wrong in some way. God tells us to forgive others as he forgave us. I was wrong for not forgiving Andrew. I cried because of my weakness. I called up my friend. I told him that I was sorry. He now understood where he went worng with the whole fish thing. We are closer today than we ever were. And are friendship is growing stronger. And I thank God for using a thing I love so much to get back a friend that I love. And I thank Bill Shatner for creating the tool, Star Trek V.

His original concept and script idea for that film was better than what we saw. But Mr. Shatner, as I hear it, went away on business and when He came back, they had slashed his scritpt taking out many sceens, and cut his budget to death. With this special edition DVD, he could film the sceens of Sybock as a kid and add them in. He can also redo the special effects shots that needed to be better with CGI. I know for a fact there are hundreds of people with experience who would love to do any kind of work with William Shatner. Finding help is not an issue. And if he could somehow convinse those Big Wigs at Paramount to give him the extra money he needs, like they did for the great Robert Wise and his Motion Picture which has also been haled as a poor film (and its not but thats for another topic), then he could give us the version he originally envisioned. Or at least one close to it.

I've read Shatners work. He's no Ford Coppola, but he's good.

Now, after that winded speach, what do you all think. Whould you like to see a DVD with added sceens, and do you think it would improve the film?

Chase

Don't worry so much. I'm positive I've heard Bill himself on this BBS say that he is willing to consider making a Director's Edition.
And I've heard elsewhere (namely, the news on TrekToday.com) that Paramount is considering making either a special edition or a director's edition of Star trek 5.
Loved your story, BTW.
I am very optimistic about there being a director's edition, but it probably won't be like the others.

The dialog I comprehended had to do with Spock however; does anyone remember an episode from TOS when Kirk lost a brother? I'm sure who ever is watching the TOS Marathon on SCI-FI might catch that one.

Just figure something to add to the post.

Thanks for the post...

I don't believe in animal brutality, but to cease a brotherly relationship over a batted fish? Okay, maybe you thought it was a symptom of a more serious underlying psycholgoical problem.

What if he'd squashed a cockroach on the sidewalk?

Where do you draw the line?

People defend horses with their life, because they are beautiful, noble animals, and fairly intelligent (all but the last attribute are strictly subjective, of course). No one defends a cockroach. I'm not sure I'd put the fish on the horse side of the fence line.

I remember hearing that no fish was hurt during the filming of "A River Runs Through It." That was quite a shocking revelation to me. I mean, you can see fishing on ESPN, where real fish are hooked and reeled in. But they had to use mechanical fish to film "A River Runs Throught It!"

I guess the message to fish is: Choose your medium wisely. And stay away from guys with baseball bats.

I don't care about the DVD. I just wanted to say that cruelty to animals is cruelty to animals and I deplore mean spiritedness in general. It took guts to do what you did. I am glad you did not end up losing a friend, but I think you did the right thing there. You have to stand up on occasion and say "I'm not tolerating this" and that takes courage. To not have done what you did would have let a little more light bleed out of the world and a little more darkness bleed in. Good for you.

I enjoyed LittleStar's comment. Like most people, I am kind to animals (though sometimes I scream at the labrador next door, because he barks 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 31 days a month, 365 days a year, 10 years a decade.....well, you get the idea!).

I believe the higher developed animals--the ones we usually think of as pets, or ocean friends--do have feelings, and are able to dream and have intelligent perceptions of their life and environment. I don't place fish into this category.

I would never let a fish come between me and a friend. Everyone has his/her own priorities. I generally place human beings above animals (though I can think of some exceptions!).

I think if a "brother" does something that really bothers you, it's better to discuss it, clarify the motives, and suggest remedies to the relationship. Communication usually works.

Communication is extreamly important. Its one of the things I picked up after a spriitual weekend I attended. To this day, me and Andrew have had to many fights to count. But We have never been on non- speaking terms for more than a few hours. After a huge fight, if we don't appologise to each other right than and there, we will in a few hours when we calm down. Then we discuss the issue in a cooler mood and find a comprimise. Its worked well for us.

At the time I was not as muture.

Thanks for responses.
