Post subject: What's your first reaction to a problem?  PostPosted: Nov 06, 2002 - 04:54 PM

I have waaay too much time on my
hands today, so I was wondering how
other people here react to a problem....
serious or not so serious.

I'm guessing most people react emotionally
at first, unless you're Spock-like, so do
you have a feeling or a thought or both?

I instinctively get defensive and say to
myself, "You can't hurt me!"....
(I'm not sure who "You" is.. Laughing )

How do you react?

Talk to everyone I can about it, thus, quite frequently, making the problem worse!
Oh yes, and having an extra glass of Chardonnay!
love sue

Hi Peg, Sue,
usually my first reaction is to sigh.......
Then if it is really upsetting I might feel crestfallen, etc....
Well tomorrow is another day....
Cheers,
Claudia.

Think Logic...

Hi Peg, this question I consider vague because every problem has variables.

Take Care,
Doc

Ok, maybe it is too vague, but
Claudia got it. Smile

I was really curious about first
reaction to a problem, serious or not too
serious.
Claudia sighs, I feel defensive....
surely, there must be a thought or feeling,
before you take any action.

Here's another example;
My eldest daughter has, what I call,
"catastropic thinking" with even mild problems....
first thought? "The sky is falling!"
After that first reaction, if she's "handled"
carefully or has some time to think rationally,
she'll try to solve the problem.

And Doc, I mean first reaction, before
you have time to analyze the problem....
how 'bout this....what's your gut reaction
when first faced with any problem.

Interesting reaction to the question tho'
Either it's too early in the morning for
introspection, the question is too vague,
or everyone who answered, except Claudia,
is repressed! Laughing Wink

In all seriousness, though...

Usually, when a problem arises, I immediately react emotionally, asking myself what the consequences are, etc. After about a minute of self-pity, I start to get the wheels a'turnin' on what the logical, methodical solution is.

It all depends on the problem, really. There are times when, if a problem arises with my writing, that I become defensive and critical of their own style of critiquing my work. Other problems, such as the recent family ones, I've tried my best to deal with the tasks at hand first, then fall apart later.

Hi Peg:

Well the mind races with animalizing tactics such as, body language, what is the hidden message, finding a positive out of a negative situation (if it's negative) and most import try, try, try real hard in Listening First BEFORE your thought pattern kicks into high gear: D

It depends on the problem.

Looking up in the rear view mirror while stopped at a red light to see a van that's much larger than what I'm driving that is going very fast and not seeing me elicited a thought of shocked resignation.

Two weeks of computer problems where I had to stay late to keep abreast of at the beginning of the school year was actually very enjoyable to me.

Punk teenagers screaming at each other in my grandmothers backyard at one in the morning while I was sleeping years ago elicited fury.

As Lazarus Long once said
"Get a shot off fast. This upsets him long enough to let you make your second shot perfect"
