(edit: it's been pointed out, in the replies below,
that this is an urban legend only....I'm leaving it
here, because the replies below won't make any sense
otherwise. Embarassed ~Peg)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Anyone remember this?"
....from a 1987 news video of Lt.Col. Oliver North,
testifying at the Iran-Contra hearings during the
Reagan Administration.
There was Ollie in front of God and country, getting
the third degree, but what he said was stunning.
He was being drilled by, then, Senator Al Gore:
"Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for
a home security system?"
Ollie replied, "Yes, I did, Sir."
The Senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of
the audience:
"Isn't that just a little excessive?"
"No, sir," continued Ollie.
"No? And why not?" the Senator asked.
"Because the lives of my family and I were
threatened, sir."
"Threatened? By whom?" the Senator questioned.
"By a terrorist, sir" Ollie answered.
"Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare
you that much?"
"His name is Osama bin Laden, sir" Ollie replied.
At this point the Senator tried to repeat the name,
but couldn't pronounce it, which most people back
then probably couldn't..
A couple of people laughed at the attempt, then the
Senator continued:
"Why are you so afraid of this man?" the Senator
asked.
"Because, sir, he is the most evil person alive that
I know of", Ollie answered.
"And what do you recommend we do about him?" asked
the Senator.
"Well, sir, if it was up to me, I would recommend
that an assassin team be formed to eliminate him and
his men from the face of the earth."
The Senator disagreed with this approach, and that
was all that was shown of the clip."
Actually, I hate to point this out, but this is really an urban legend that distorts the real facts.
North did name a terrorist in this line of questioning, but it was Abu Nidal, not bin Laden.
And the person doing the questioning was John Nields, a non-senator, NOT Al Gore.
You can search on Google for the appropriate terms and find the same info I did.
Thanks for the reminder peg. After 9/11 I reflected on the election and thanked the heavens Mr. Gore was not in office.
Here's a link with the details
http://www.tafkac.org/ulz/ollie.html
This is a great site to find out about urban legends, and it was $16,000 not $60,000
Ollie isn't so simon pure that he should run around calling anyone else evil... he's done some terroristic stuff himself and was the conduit for the flood of cocaine that plagued this country in the
80's... he ordered Barry Seal's death when Barry had video of the Bush brothers getting caught in a coke bust and being let go...and he was funding terrorists (Contras) himself with drug money, at the behest of George Bush the senior. Wrapping yourself up in a flag and stonewalling Congress doesn't change the fact that all that stuff is evil...
I didn't think Ollie was running around anywhere doing anything. I kind of figured he's come to the conclusion the best thing he can do is lie (lye lay?) low and hope people forget about him. This is just another wacky e-mail hoax that mixes a little truth and it seems that the only one it's making look good is the Gore who wasn't there and it tries to make Osama look bad which is true just not relevant to the real story here.
Thanks, John and TJ for the correct info.
I was going to just delete the article, but
I think I'll leave it to remind myself to
double-check anything I get from someone else,
before I post it. This is the second "urban
legend" this person has sent me too. Laughing
What did Scotty say? "Fool me once, etc.....".
Well, it's a good one, and easy to believe. All urban legends have that in common, though.
The only reason I looked it up on Google was to get more info about it. Only then did I realize that it was an urban legend.
Ollie worked in the Pentagon. He was a Lt. Col. In the Pentagon a Lt. Col is nothing more than an errand boy. Ollie could not have done anything on his own. Look higher up in the "food chain" for the culprits responsible for everything that the man ever did.
I'll be sure to do that too, next time.
Another clue might have been that the
story wasn't really one-sided (which is why I could post it Wink ), because this supposedly took place
during Reagan's administration with Gore attending.
Both sides fairly represented in what was supposed
to be an example of governmental ineptness.
Thanks for being so tactful, both of you guys!
I think I'll go to bed now! Laughing peg
(I'm not good at that game, but can someone find me some pictures so I can put funny captions under them? Razz}
