Last night E! reran Shatner's 1999 appearance on Howard Stern.

It was classic Shatner! Ever the showman, ever the real life human being!

It started off with Shatner in the hallway wondering what Stern had in store for him, as the last few times he had been there he had him doing some bizarre, unmentionable things.

Shatner walked into Howard's studio alongside rapper "Rated R" who, apparently, was there to help promote the movie "Free Enterprise". But the focus didn't last long on "Rated R", it quickly focused to a carefully selected trekkie who took his fascination with Star Trek a little too far. He's the type of trekkie that gives all other normal trekkies a bad reputation. If anyone clearly needed to "Get A Life!" it was this guy.

First, he comes in dressed as Kirk. Nothing unusual about that except that he has brought all of the accessories: the communicator, the phaser, you name it. He even has a few Captain Kirk dolls that he casually plays with. It should be quite obvious that Stern would totally rag on this guy, and he did. Even Shatner couldn't help himself, although Bill seemed more scared than anything else. This guy was just precious feet away from Bill and he's lambasting Bill as to why he should embrace Captain Kirk and even, in my opinion, become him in real life, all the while holding some rudimentary Star Trek weaponry! It was really freaky.

The guy kept holding up his copy of "Get A Life!" and offering his critiques. Bill, showing his good natured side, actually tried to answer some of his questions and concerns, but really couldn't as he was still a bit unnerved and because Stern kept interrupting to make fun of the guy.

Shatner only seemed to relax a bit once they had to remove the guy from the studio. But then the show ended. I'm sure real, normal, trekkies probably wish the Stern producers would have chosen someone less extreme as this guy, but then that wouldn't have made for good Stern.

Did anyone else, especially normal trekkers, see this and care to comment?

What a shame we didn't know this was going to be on!

Thanks for the report.

I didn't know ahead of time. I happened to be flipping around and noticed it. It was one of the more entertaining Stern shows, as most of them involve fuzzed out nude women looking for their 15 minutes of fame. As nice as that is the first 1,700 times, it really does get old after a while. It was nice to see a quality guest for a change, and it doesn't get any better than Bill!

I SO agree with this!

LOL,yes I have seen all of Bill's appearances on Stern and I caught that rerun last night too.
They are all classics IMO. Some of the things that have gone on in Howard's studio in front of Bill I can't even list here they were so X rated.
Bill always handles these curve balls with grace, dignity, and good humor.
He seems so shocked at what is going on around him that he comes off as a great straight man to Stern and crew's brand of comedy.
Yes,that guy they brought on the show last night was a real nerd.
He didn't represent what most Trek fans are like at all.
I had a lot of fun laughing at what a geek he was but like you said Jrinick he gives the true fans a bad name and feeds the stereotype that we need to "Get A Life" in the bad sense.
Anyway,I think my favorite moment of Bill on Stern was when Howard had someone call the studio and pretend to be George Takei. It was a very good imitation and Bill played along with the whole thing as "George" promoted his book and repeated what he said about Bill in it.
I can't wait until Bill is on the show again.

This is precisely why that "nerd" was so pitiful. He insisted that Shatner should devote his life to Kirk, yet Shatner is such a versatile performer that it would really by a crying shame if he relegated himself to just one gig.

Take me, I would be just as much of a Shatner fan even if he wasn't Captain Kirk, and he only seems to get better as the years go on!

No, I have never seen it. I wish I had known it would be on beforehand.

Bill's appearances, on any show, are anything but boring. I especially like the stunts he and Conan O'Brien have pulled on the audience.
