| I've been out of town quite a bit lately, but one of the more interesting adventures was my attempt to swim with the whale sharks in the Sea of Cortez a few days ago. I had a wonderful experience about three years ago when I managed to actually swim next to these magnificent creatures, and I was eager to share the experience with my wife, Elizabeth. Alas, the whale sharks decided NOT to make an appearance for us. We had to console ourselves with starry nights, freshly caught fish, and swimming with friends. All in all it was a great time, even though we failed to see the whale sharks. My best, Bill |

From the title I thought you would be describing a trip to Vegas!
Hearing this story of your vacation just reinforces why we admire you so much and are fans. Is there anything adventurous that you haven't done in your life? |

I had a feeling you have been on vacation
I imagine it is AWESOME to be in the water next to those beautiful animals. It would take my breath away Just seeing them on tv does that. So glad you had fun and are back.

I was wondering if Bill was going to reprise his bow hunting for bear like he did several years ago on the Original American Sportsman with Kurt Gowdy.

Welcome home William!!!!!
Glad to hear you had taken some time off to be with family and friends. Sounds like you had quite an exciting adventure even though those collossal sharks didn't make an appearence.
After all the running around you have done for the last three months you and your family need a break, and the board survived just fine while you were gone!
Wecome back!

Hello Bill
Hope you had fun. Maybe you'll have better luck next time. Now when ever you go back you probably won't have a camera handy, and then you'll be swarmed by whale sharks, when you least expect it.... Maybe the critters were camera shy, LOL, just kidding |

You certainly have more guts than I do, and this is just another example. I know whale sharks aren't maneaters, but that makes no difference. I saw "Jaws" as a teenager. That summer, my uncle had taken my brother and me on a week long camping/boating/skiiing trip to Nolin Lake, here in Kentucky..howdy neighbor . Anyway, I could never let on, but the entire time I was in the water, waiting for the boat to pull me up on my skis, I was nervous. I knew there were no lake sharks, but I knew there were snapping turtles. I could just hear that music, and see that giant turtle rising faster and faster from the murky depths, aiming right for my, well..aiming right for me!
I'm glad you had great time, and welcome back! |

Welcome back, Bill. I'm glad that ya'll had a good time.
I don't think I would have the guts to swim with something like that, although I did go swimming in Port Aransas, Texas once while some large Jellyfish migration was happening. Hurt like heck when I realized, a hundred feet from shore, that I had better swim back! *g* |

Ocean creatures are so uncooperative like that. When you want to swim with the whale sharks, a great white shows up to check out the smorgasboard selection on the ChrisCraft Cafe.
Seriously Bill, I'm sorry the whale sharks weren't around for the swim. My eldest son honeymooned in Bermuda and showed me some of the photos of them swimming with rays. It looked like a lot of fun and something as majestic as a whale shark would be a memory of a lifetime. |

Swimming among Dolphins, whale sharks etc... is something that captures my imagination.
my husband was in Perth , Australia, last year on a short trip, and his group went swimming with dolphins. However all the time he kept struggling with the mouth piece of his snorkel, trying to avoid swallowing half of the ocean water! Somehow I don't think he found the experience very enjoyable.....
However he climbed all the way to the top of the Gloustester tree , in Pemberton, Karri Country, all of 61 metres. That's something I could never do......
All the best,
Claudia. |

I'm afraid I'm going to show my ignorance here, but even though I wouldn't be able to tell a whale shark if I tripped over one (perish the thought!), it sounds like it would have been a real story to tell - better luck next time!
Glad you had a nice break away though and good to see you back Mr. Shatner!
All the best

I swim with sharks every day here at the Sea of Corus in Vancouver, and, yikes the last thing Id want to do is expose my wife to the experience, but hey 'whatever gets you through the night' as some singer once sang... shes not that strong a swimmer anyway. |

Wow, that was amazing! Thank you for the article jrinck, it was very enlightening, I can see the fascination I didn't know what to expect when I envisaged them and didn't come anywhere close - they're breathtaking.......don't think I'd have too much trouble spotting one now! |

Pity about the whale shark this time. I too have been doing something different - Tony Robbins came to Melbourne, Australia at the end of OCT and I fire-walked on a 12ft bed of burning coals - unscathed! Awesome to know anything is possible! Like SPOCK's quote: "There are always possibilities!" I never realised just how adventurous & courious I really am. When will we see you in Australia? You (& Leonard) have many fans here! Bring your books and photos! I'll be there!
Health & Happiness to You and Yours

Hi, I'm Hal Browder, Secretary, Memphis' own ALLIES FOR STAR TREK, oldest Trek club in the country
Have you ever been assaulted by a deranged opossum?
Sci fi trivia: Opossum have the most teeth of any mammal (I think! Isn't that correct Spock?)
They're as ornery as Hades, ask a koala
Adam Sandler (WATER BOY) says they're angry because they've got so many teeth, and don't have a toothbrush
Momma says. |

Hi,
I've been to this thread already but I'd just like to say that sharks are a great hobby of mine, especially Great Whites. We know very little about the creatures and an attempt was made by some professionals to try and attach a camera to a female Great White's back on "Wildlife On One" on the B.B.C. It certainly was a programme not for the faint hearted. I think I'd like to see a Great White, out of sheer curiosity. However, as attacks do happen, you've got more chances of getting hit by a bus or struck by lightning and unfortunately, the creature itself is very rare because idiots go out and kill it for the sport (what sport?). I'd go down in a cage and take some pictures if needs be. I don't think when you're down there it's too bad, I'd take someone with me, LOL. The problem is getting in and out of the water... one false move and the Jaws theme springs to mind, LOL. No seriously, it is a great opportunity and if I could, I'd do it, but that means going to Aus and that's a long plane flight. Anyhow, I shall try and find a way. I have heard some really ludicrous stories about people and Great Whites. Anyhow, the Whale shark is the largest fish in the water and it is (I can guarantee) ever so peaceful down there. Basking sharks are a great sight too on pictures. Interestingly, Great Whites haven't been spotted in UK waters for at least a century or more, but someone off Cornwall said he saw a massive shadow in the water when in a boat... could've easily been a dolphin or a basking shark which is bigger than a Great White. Still, if you get an opportunity, get into sharks. It's an interesting hobby. |

| Believe it or not, whale sharks eat plankton and are very peaceful. They still are, however, true sharks. My best, Bill |
