Thanks, everyone!!! I really appreciate the good wishes!

Littlestar, I really appreciated the laugh! Instead of "between engagements" or "between gigs", we have "between digs"!

Sue said you all might be interested in how it went and what we found. We found five sites that had never been recorded before, and two of them were big and significant. The two sites (probably one but divided by an old power line right-of-way which was all plowed up) were about 3,000 years old, and big enough to be a town or larger. We found a great many chert flakes, a "biface blade", and an atlatl point (that enabled us to date it). The site(s) were at least a few thousand square meters in extent - we were limited in where we could go so we aren't sure. We do know that along one front the site was over a hundred meters long.

We found another site that was also big, but it had been plowed and had planted pines - meaning the ground was so messed up that it didn't "qualify" for protection. The last two sites were small... early historic. We found early "whiteware" sherds and some chert flakes.

That was along 35 miles of proposed right-of-way that we tested. We also encountered some sites that had already been recorded and found lots of flakes there, along with a broken point and some "manuports" (objects obviously brought in by people long ago, but not modified).

That sort of work is dig a hole... screen the dirt... record the data... fill in the hole... and repeat and repeat and repeat (usually every 30 meters for 35 miles).

It was a blast (except when digging in the rain - not fun). Where else can you use all the skills you learned, be out in the woods/fields/hills, spend all day there, and get paid to do it? Plus have the bonus of finding a couple of significant sites?

(Oh, and a little thing I learned... finding 'treasure' or gold is something that most archaeologists have mixed feelings about... because it causes so much headache. We'd rather find an ancient midden!!!)
