Red Alert, Shields up!
Stay safe and please check in with us, if you can. I know power will be out all over the place.
I have already been contacted by the company I contract with to be on alert to help with emergency calls.
Looks like Irene is just going to do a drive by Florida, but I bet we will still feel the rustle of her skirt as it sweeps by. |

| Looks like we'll be getting a drive by too, tropical storm warnings up for Saturday night into Sunday. Charging batteries and checking the generator as I type. Stay safe. |

I guess my previous post was a little premature. Just watching News12NJ, and Gov. Christie has already declaired a state of emergency. I though, BS, until I found this:
http://www.nj.com/weather-guy/index.ssf ... shift.html
I remember in '85, when we weren't warned in advance and Gloria hit full force. So, instead of taking the kids into Manhatten as planned, we are preparing. Glass table off the back porch and into the garage, hanging plants and flags coming down, anything lying loose around the house being stored. Heading to the store for batteries, and the usual, bread, milk, eggs, bottled water.....
Tomorrow is suppose to be a great day weatherwise, the calm before the storm, so we'll prepare today, have fun tomorrow. You never know. I remember when everyone wasn't prepared, and what the aftermath was.
The houses across the road from the beach. The houses directly on the beach, for the most part, were no where to be found..... |

My family went thru Hurricane Donna back in the sixties. At the time we were living in a small shotgun house with a tin roof. We knew the man who built it. He was a life-time Florida man who knew how to build a house to withstand a lot of wind. It was a small house, but well built.
Our little house made it thru with no damage. Some of the newer homes lost their roofs and more.
Mom filled the bathtub with water and covered the tub with a sheet to keep dust and dirt out. We were without power for about two weeks. It didn't phase us though. We and the neighbors all got together and had cook outs. Our neighbor next door owned the feed store in town and raise chickens, turkeys, rabbits, and even parakeets. Surprisingly, none of the critters were harmed.
We didn't have school until the power got restored so for us kids it was like being on a holiday, although I am sure it was a nightmare for the adults.
Even today, one can go to certain places and be shown remnants of some of the damage done by Donna.
That was certainly an adventure. |

I'm praying here too. As of last night, they've evacuated all of Cape May & Atlantic County's in the southern most part of the state, the Parkway is now closed from the Point Pleasant exit (my hometown) and below, Monmouth county is posted evacuation routes, and Long Beach Island is a ghost town.
Up here, the grocery stores are bare, the Home Depot is going crazy, and people are suring up their homes. We did most of that yesterday, and went out for batteries, canned goods and bottled water, etc. We're as ready as we can be, I hope.
The more I watch the coverage, the more concerned I'm getting. Talking of evacuating certain low lying parts of Manhatten and all of Hoboken is unheard of. They're saying that this could be the worst storm we've seen around here in over 100 years.
Should be interesting... |

That sounds really bad....
They are talking on FOX news that if you need to get out do it now.....They are saying believe it or not a there a few that are STAYING in lowlying areas...what idiots......
I saw that about the Mayor of NYC shutting stuff down tomorrow till Monday.....Hopefully the subway rats know how to swim!!

Hi DianaG, It rained off and on Thursday, but Irene sort of sneaked past us during the night without so much as a whisper.
It is dry and hot here now (Friday) and is supposed to be the same tomorrow.
I know the East is all hunkered down though, because the pizza company that I take calls for is usually hoppin and poppin this time of night. I sat for an hour and got ONE, mind you on a Friday night, ONE call for an order. I am now waiting for the California crowd to show up. Hope their in the mood for pizza.
I haven't looked at the weather yet, so I will just say I hope everyone is safe and well at this point. I am heading in to look now. |

| I hope my friends at the Franciscan Friary are ok. The monestary in on Long Island and the Poor Clair convent is just down the road from them. |

Just sitting here waiting for the rain now. Everything is secure, it's just a matter of time. My buddy Marc just called, and he's on his way north on the Parkway at exit 77. He secured the beach house, and the boat is out and in dry dock. It's already raining buckets down there, which means the outer bands are about to get here.
Watching coverage on CCN about what's been going on down south.
This should be a fun evening.
Wish us luck. |

Good Morning!
Yes, we are still here. Amazingly, we still have power, for now. The news says about 500,000 people here in Jersey do not. Usually this area is the first to go down, so I'm really surprised.
We got about 10 inches of rain last night, winds about 70mph, but except for some flooding in the cellar, so far so good. As long as the power stays up, it's managable with the sump pump. Still getting high wind gusts right now, but the rain has stopped. May get more with the outer bands coming through.
Can't imagine what downtown looks like, and later on I may venture out to get pics. The Rockaway river that runs through town usually floods during large storms, and I know for fact that they were evacuating people over there. Bridget got a text from a friend that they were made to leave their home late last night.
So it is a good morning.....
How's everyone doing? |

Yes, we are fine, and thanks for the hugs.
Worst part of last night was about 1am, we woke up to a loud boom. I really thought a tree had come down on the house. Turns out a large branch did come down on the roof, rolled all the way down, and hit into the front lawn. A few shingles will have to be replaced, but no big deal. Sure beats one of these 100 year old trees taking out the house.
I was talking to my uncle before, the fire dept is at his house pumping out the cellar. They have 3 feet of water over there. I'd go over to help, but we're banned at the moment from driving. Gov. Christie is telling everyone to stay in their homes. They want everyone off the roads to make way for the emergency workers. And we're still having high wind gusts which could bring down additional trees and limbs.
Haven't been able to talk to my father yet, but they have no power down there. Saw reporters on News12NJ in Point Pleasant, and it's not pretty.
Right now we're expecting a flooding emergency. Some damns aren't expected to hold, many rivers haven't crested yet. So even though Irene has run through, we still have a while to go yet.
I'm just sitting tight for now. |

Just glad everyone is OK...so far. When I saw the death toll was at 6, before much had really happened...I dreaded what was to come. Blessings to those who walked on at this time...selfishly, I am glad it is not one of my circle
