| My hometown is being torn apart by mindless scum, looting and destroying anything and everything in their path. Making innocents homeless in some of the most deprived areas of the city. As if these people aren't already in enough grief. Now it's spread to my part of town. I'm glad I'm leaving. |

What’s happening in London is explained here, with additional detail here.
How it happened is easily understood.
Why it happened is unresolved. Ostensibly, Mark Duggan is why it happened.
Yet he’s is merely the catalyst, not the why. |

I used to work in Tottenham, in fact one of my former places of work is in that clip. I live in Walthamstow now, which is having smaller scale rioting of its own. Probably the same perpetrators as the two Boroughs Waltham Forest and Haringey) are neighbours.

You are joining your family in NY this month, aren't you?
I think what is happening there is spreading through most of Europe right now. Look at Greece, the shootings in Norway, etc.
Interesting that these riots, like the uprisings in a good part of the Middle East, are being linked by technology. Something not possible in the past.
I wonder when it will hit here as well???? |

There’s been a lot back and forth about who is to blame. Such are the vicissitudes of life. I believe it was neither Duggan nor Blackberry.
If you like, fill in your own reason __________.
For me, London’s metropolitan police provide the reason:
“We believe that certain elements, who were not involved with the vigil, took the opportunity to commit disorder and physically attack police officers, verbally abuse fire brigade personnel and destroy vehicles and buildings.”
The rioters were angry and bored. They acted with mob mentality. They looted for avaricious gain. They acted without reason. They acted, and reacted, on a lark.
And that’s the scariest possible reason.
__________
"Perhaps you should forget logic and devote yourself to motivations of passion or gain. Those are reasons for murder."

Pardon my ignorance, but don't your police carry guns? I'm watching BBC live right now, and it seems that even though the police force is out there in riot gear, they don't seem to have any way to bring these people under control. They're just standing there taking it.
I was watching them looting Debenhams, and did they set that on fire as well? Now there at Chalk Farm.
Holy Cow, I can't believe they are just going from store to store, street to street, without the police taking control. |

The Police there do not carry guns as a rule....so they are using the shooting of Duggan as the supposed excuse...just as the groups did here with Rodney King. It is obvious they are just using excuses to let out bitterness and Hatred... and gangs are just going for anything they can get their hands on...
It is spreading way too fast... Leeds ....Birmingham...now into Liverpool...Bristol?
Makes me glad my English sister is in Italy now...getting Married...I hope it calms down before she gets home to Essex.....they say only minor incidents of disorder in the Buckhurst Hill area. |

Cheers, Everton. Looks like our game will be postponed this weekend. I was in Tottenham High Road this morning for work. The Park Lane ticket office at WHL has been vandalised. The whole area looks even worse than normal, and if you've ever been there you can imagine how bad it is!
Turns out that I know a few of the rioters through mutual friends. They have no interest in justice for Duggan's family, they're just thieves. Nothing more than that. |

I feel your pain. Vancouver experienced a night of rioting, looting, and violence after the Vancouver Canucks lost to the Boston Bruins.
It's a shameful behaviour and an illustration of mob mentality.
Lessons will be learned.

Believed the Tottenham riots would have burned themselves out by now, both literally and figuratively. I was wrong:
As Rioting Widens, Cameron Deploys 10,000 More Police
Poor, angry & bored is far more dangerous than rich, angry & bored. There’s a plethora of unemployed rioters who are unhappy with UK government austerity measures.
But that’s a socioeconomic explanation which is inadequate and too touchy-feely for me. Let me keep it simple. Those rioters are pissed off, highly pissed off. As to why they’re pissed off, I’ll leave that adjudication to you. I merely aver they’re pissed off.
Which brings us to, Could it happen here? For those of you who are absolutely, positively convinced it can’t, I have a two word rebuttal: it can.
Moreover, we have the right to bear arms.

It really sucks to read someone's hometown is being burned. Hopefully, this will end soon.
Since it's been going on for a few days, is there a chance of bringing in the British Army? What about tear gas in some spots? More man power as a show of force to diffuse the melee?
I expect this from the Irish, but.... |

The beat goes on:
As London cleans up from riots, residents fume
With this opening sentence,
“Londoners are angry at rioters and at authorities' response.”
Angry at rioters and at authorities, generalized amorphous anger is the most virulent form of anger.
Howard Beale (Peter Finch, Network) is correct,
“I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!”
Except he’s talking about peaceable assembly protest, or peaceable disassembly protest (like yelling out your window); he wasn’t talking about rioting and looting. The rioters will fail – eventually – with London calmer and the rest of the UK remaining. It’s preordained.
My advice to the rioters, maintain an adversarial relationship with your MP and an amiable relationship with your constabulary. Peaceable redress of grievances works, rioting and looting fails. |

and now it becomes political...
The police and government blame social media as the vehicle to organize these riots.
