I couldn't really agree with her stance on certain issues. Some things should be learned first hand, rather than taught. Shocked

So true. Especially when it comes to politics, it's just better if we play with ourselves.

Yeah, I sure would not want to see anyone jabbed with a flag pole or conked on the head with a statue of liberty replica. Shocked Wink

But that's pre-1920's Mack Sennet comedy!

There were times when I had a strong desire to post something that was anti-religious. Oh, but that's just an invitation for someone to claim they were offended. I just wanted to say something like, "There is no such thing as sin" and "Jesus was an alien". Silly, fun stuff!!!

Big words like 'proselytizing' make my head hurt, so anything that causes them to be used can't be good...

First, I am NOT going to get in a religious fight here, I agree with Paul,
this is no place for it, you aren't going to convert anyone here.

But I would like to make one point......proselytizing

I remember my "West Wing". they loved that word.

It's called the Great Commission in the Bible, it's also called "witnessing".
Believers are "told" to share their witness with others.

I've always wondered the reasons behind the need to change the word...

Main Entry: pros·e·ly·tize
Pronunciation: \ˈprä-s(ə-)lə-ˌtīz\
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): pros·e·ly·tized; pros·e·ly·tiz·ing
Date: 1679

intransitive verb
1 : to induce someone to convert to one's faith
2 : to recruit someone to join one's party, institution, or cause
transitive verb
: to recruit or convert especially to a new faith, institution, or cause

Or, as if often the case, to judge against ones chosen form of faith and to use subtle wording to infer that their chosen form of worship is unacceptable....as in sending a Christian text to an individual of Jewish faith

It wasn't so much the words, as the way it was done...IMHO.
You all know I am not Christian, yet I never try to tell anyone they are wrong to chose that faith and I often will use words of their faith for communication of ideas. It's all in showing RESPECT....again IMHO

I know what the word means, and it was judged correctly as used
here.

I have only "witnessed" when asked to do so Idea

It can be a wonderful experience

That's what I meant GMan...witnessing is sharing with others who WISH TO share the WORD

so, the other word/definition is not trying to change the meaning of witnessing...
because they are two different and unique endeavors....right?
and with that I will shut up

Witnessing doesn't always mean sharing words. It is showing others by the way we live. It is sharing a loaf of bread with someone who doesn't have enough to eat or offering a kind word to someone who is having a bad day. It is the difference between rolling our sleeves up and pitching in to help during a time of crisis (Katrina, 911) without preaching or judging or trying to put blame on victims for their troubles. It's not so much what we say, but what we do. As a wise person once said, "Anyone knows how to behave in church.... it is when you are going about your daily lives that people are watching to see how you behave."

To each, their own;

Didn't post that link as an endorsement, but merely to show no matter how fanciful, the Internet covers it.

I agree. Cool Which leads me to a great question. I will start a new thread for it though. Wink

Welcome back KoriLinae.

And please, don't be concerned about highfalutin words.

For I can tell you without qualification,

There's no sesquipedalian posting in this forum.

Have I ever told you how wise I think you are?
As a new Christian I find the witnessing thing the most difficult. i can picture the faces of people I might witness to! I have so much admiration for those who use their religious impulses to do good, unfortunately we have all met those who use religion as a stick to beat other people with...
