On a dusty afternoon in a squalid U.S. Army base in eastern Baghdad, the world seemed to cave in on Spec. Joe Sanders. On daily patrols, soldiers around him were being killed and grievously wounded by improvised roadside bombs. The sweltering August heat and stink of Baghdad were oppressive. He was thousands of miles from home. And he had just learned that his wife -- his lifeline to the sane, normal world -- wanted a divorce.
Alone in his barracks room at Forward Operating Base Rustamiyah, Sanders, a soft-spoken young man with a pleasant demeanor, seized his M-4 carbine, put the barrel under his chin, squeezed his eyes shut and pulled the trigger. It was August, 2008. Sanders was 26 years old.

I just hope this new wife stands by him. or that will be a terrible scenario. Military life is hellish for a mother with kids. I raised 3 almost single handed. It ain't no picnic i can tell you:)
Good luck to this man, and friends like his are hard to come by

"And how,'' Godding asked gently, "did you discover it was missing?''
Powerful... |

A lucky guy to have a friend that close.
It's a rarity these days.....
Great story, sad he had to go though all that.
Glad he made it through. |

| I think that we often take our freedoms for granted and don't realize the tough job our men and women in the military have. It is also tough on the families of military personel. |

Yowza...
Relationships are tough even the best ones have trials. I admire these men and women that are out there in the Armed Forces. I would love to take a tour of my band and play for them..... |
