Job woes alert!!! Wink My job specifically.

Allegedly (i was not there and i don't think it's true anyway) someone on my shift (midnights) was sleeping the other day. Malarkey I tell ya!!!! He had closed his eyes for the daily intimidation (turning on of the lights). It's quite shocking to go from "half light" to full blast, so you squint and whatnot.

Because of the alleged transgression, they (upper management) are forcing us to have the lights on the brightest setting ALL NIGHT LONG!!!!! I am currently functioning on 1 1/2 hrs of sleep, and have to go in there tonight--it's overtime or I wouldn't go.

Last night was the first night of this. I went home this morning with burning eyes (I can't wear my contacts in there anymore) and as close to a migraine as you can get!!! Then, because of the lighting at work, I was not able to fall asleep--even though I took 1/2 an Ambien!!!!!! I was up for 23 hrs before getting a whole whopping 1 1/2 hrs of sleep!!!!

I am ready to quit my job and go on welfare!!!!!

I have put in a call to the president of my union (on a Saturday no less) and haven't heard back yet. Don't expect to until Monday, unfortunately. I am wearing my glasses in tonight and taking my sunglasses that fit over them in as well. If there is an argument over this, I may end up going home sick.

As luck would have it, I happen to have a routine asthma dr appointment on Monday. Pile more luck onto that because he is also a sleep disorder dr!!!!! I will be getting some type of documentation on this. I will also be making an eye dr appt (it's been about 4 yrs anyway) to get some type of documentation about my eyes being light sensitive. That has been true for some time now, but I've never had to have any type of documentation for it. All of my co-workers will be making eye dr appts as well. If we ALL have documentation, they will be forced to turn the lights off again, or risk going against the Americans With Disabilities Act. HUGE FINES will be involved if they don't comply.

I have had it with the crappy treatment we receive and I'm mad as hell!!!!! If I have to go out on a stress leave, then so be it!!!! I've got 4 months of sick time saved up!!!!!! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Thank you all, as usual, for listening to my rant!!!! It's nice to have a place where you can go and vent!!!!! Very Happy Very Happy

I've worked in similar environments over the years - both in the military and elsewhere - and I would be skeptical of anyone who had done the same that claimed they had never started to lose strength in their neck muscles during a quiet nightshift spent sitting at a console.

Not to put a damper on a perfectly good rant, but isn't it possible that this guy was found to be 'less than fully awake' in a dimly lit work area toward the end of his nightshift and - if that was the case - he would be the last person to admit it? Given that possibility, what management has done in response is simply taking responsible action on behalf of the citizens who's safety depends on the people who work in your facility being at their best, day or night...

...and the guy himself would be lucky that he didn't lose his job.

I think that there's at least an even chance that your displeasure over the outcome of this incident might be more accurately leveled at your co-worker who brought it on in the first place, yes?

Idea

I know what you are saying, but I just found out that he was absolutely awake!!! He was not allowed to look at anything on the computer when he was filling out the paperwork for the incident. He looked it up last night. If he was sleeping, how did he take care of a police crew at that time??? Everything we do on the computer is "time stamped". He found the evidence to exhonorate himself!!!!!!

And I understand what you are saying about being mad at my co-worker. I left out the part about the boss having a hard-on to have the lights turned on for all 3 shifts for the past several months!!! Slight oversight by me in my rant there..... Embarassed And the fact that, for some unknown reason, the boss despises 3rd shift. None of us have ever done anything to deserve this (as far as I know). We are treated like the red-headed bastard step-children around there. Always have been.....

My co-worker is hoping they have a "Chief's hearing" on the whole matter. He is going to let them have it for all the harassment we've been on the receiving end of. Not to mention the fact that there will be a Lt. in there that on several occasions used to sleep for hours on end when he was a Sgt on midnights with us....... People will be thrown under the bus on this!!

There is sooooooo much more I could tell you that goes on there, but I don't have that much extra time on my hands..... Wink Suffice to say, we are treated like 3rd class citizens when all we want to do is be left alone to do our jobs every day. I've been there almost 12 years now. I think I know how to do my job, but this "regime" doesn't seem to agree.... We have been stuck with a boss that thrives on negativity and throwing his weight around at every turn. We're thinking he has a severe "Napoleon complex" goin' on!!!

Ain't that the truth???!!!! Laughing

Talked to my union today. Not good. We're screwed for the moment.

Went to the asthma doc today. Lungs good!!!! WOO HOOO!!! Some good news!!! He's also a sleep disorder specialist. He's not happy about my current situation AT ALL!!!!!!! Made notes about it in my chart!!!

I've had 1 1/2 hrs of sleep today. Mommy (God Bless Her) took me to my appt. She didn't want me driving, and quite frankly I wasn't going to drive anyway. Not good!! Needless to say, I'm not going to work tonight, and I have a doctors' note. Shocked

I made an eye doctors' appt for Friday. We'll see what he has to say. I think I need a new glasses prescription anyway (it's been about 3 or 4 years since I've gone.... Embarassed ). I haven't felt the need to go since I wasn't having any vision problems. NOW I am!!! Can't wear my contact lenses to work anymore. I had to "peel" them off of my eyes last night and put my glasses on!!!! Shocked

The City just sent out layoff notices today too. 125 police officers this year..... Sigh..... Here we go again.......

Toledo OH to Mount Airy NC is barely an 8 hour drive...

...there could easily be a friendly 'badge-to-badge' chat to be had during a potential 'date-yet-to-be-determined' WSBBS 'Eastern Time Zone Summit'!

(shameless plug Wink )

I think you need to look for a new job.

I know the economy sucks, but I can't imagine going into a place every day that I dreaded and despised.

At least start looking for something else. Working under the conditions you're dealing with cannot be good for your health.

Bwaaaa-haaaa-haaaaa!!!! If only..... Laughing

Yeah, I've been looking for a new job for a few months now. There's nothing around here. I'd have to pick up and move cross-country. Can't do that. There's the issue of a house here, not to mention almost my entire family is here. Can't do it..... Hour commute....I'd give that a try!!! But again, nothing out there.

I have noticed a LOT of jobs for truck drivers with a class-A CDL license. I'm thinking about that. I could get a "dedicated" route, and still be home every evening and off on the weekends...... It's a thought.....

One of the little 'burbs around here is giving a Civil Service Test soon. I'm going to fill out an application and take the test. Can't hurt!!! And it's free to do so!!!! Might as well. I scored high enough on the one I took 17yrs ago and I got the job!!!

I've got to do something soon. I was thinking about medical transcription too, but that would cost me some $$$ to go to school for it. I don't have the money for it.... Mad I'm stuck for now and I'll try to make the best of it......

Up here, any medical coding (billing, transcription ect..) wants experience *and* schooling.

It's stupid, but so is everything these days it seems.

Sorry to hear about the lousy conditions at work! A few lights could always "mysteriously" break... Wink

I think the doctors notes and stuff are a good way to go!
