Shades of a famous headline in Britain in the thirties, "Fog in Channel, Europe cut off"!
Amazingly our entire air space was closed down today because of the ash resulting from an erupting volcano in Iceland. First time since there has been an airport in Britain! |

Nice photo.
Actually, there are fur airports with London in the title...Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stanstead. Heathrow is the only one in even Greater London. |

You have to wonder how bad it will be when Yellowstone goes. |

I have staff in Algiers that were supposed to return Saturday.
Usually I route them on Air Canada, Air France or Lufthansa via London, Paris or Frankfurt.
I'm scrambling (even now..) to get them to Cairo, then on Delta through New York back to Montreal.
It's been a very... very... long day. Communications to Algiers leaves much to be desired. |

| I read a fascinating article this morning all about how it was this phenomenon that precipitated the French Revolution because it caused the famine that drove people onto the streets.... |

I think Bob went thru Gatwick on his way to Sicily in 08. He got to spend a night in England on the way home. |

Bleedin' Blighty was far from being, "cut off" from "The rest of the world". All air traffic ceased, that's all. You'd have to have all forms of communication not functioning before you'd be "cut off". Sounds like the yellow journalism from Citizen Kane.
I wonder if any of the environmentalists are buggin' out, with ALL of that pollution going into our fragile, eggshell of a climate.
The sun looks blinkin' ruddy in Gorn's picture! Ruddy England!
Did any other countries cancel flights, or was in just bleedin' England? |

Here's what Bill Tweeted about 4 hours ago:
"I think networks tried to keep me from leaving Cannes, but the ol' erupt-a-volcano-so-the-airports-close trick can't stop me. My best, Bill" |

| Great news actually, whenever there is a major eruption that spews ash into the atmosphere, we get a maga ski season in Australia. Season starts in June. |

LOL!!!!
Nice quip there Bill and I wonder if he was a "Get Smart" fan?
Nice picture there Gornman that is a fascinating picture...
GReenchick the ash isn't causing any illnesses over there is it?
We have had numerous cancellations here in Illinois and Chicago from the Volcano.
I have a feeling the world will have some pretty sunsets from the ash and also a bit of Global cooling too..they are saying if the thing keeps up with the ash works for a few weeks or months more, the temp of the earth can go down two degrees and have cooler summers.....

The Tweets of other folks also made the news including Bill's.

No, it's not causing any health problem as far as I know. This could go on for weeks, the news said that privately the airlines are not expecting to get back to normal til wednesday and then there'll be such a backlog of people it'll take ages to clear. When we were stuck in Milan through a combination of strikes and fog, we were told that we had no rights at all on any flights that had left after ours. We just had to wait til there were spaces on another flight, whcih, because of the strikes and fog, there weren't. We eventually had to book seats on a BA flight, otherwise I could have seen us there for a week!
I feel SO sorry for people stuck at the end of their holiday with no money, not knowing whether to leave the airport or not, even if they can afford it! |

Feeling "SO sorry" for people because they can't fly home? Good grief.
Maybe if their homes had been pulverized by an earthquake, washed away by a flood, buried in a mudslide, sucked into the sky by a tornado or blown to smithereens by a hurricane. But because they can't fly? N |

| Oh go boil your head! I am aware that on the scale of human tragedy it is not the worst thing that can happen to you but it is pretty irritating if you are embroiled in the whole thing as you would know if that had happened to you... |
