The great thing in the US like here in Australia is there are many discount fares on sites such as Priceline, I flew all over the US on my two trips very cheaply, much cheaper than I could drive.
Having flown over 400 times its like catching a bus and the fear of flying is one I can never understand, I can tell you some very scary stories in my flights, upside down aircraft, aborted landings, missing the runway etc but then again I crossed a road in Veitnam on foot and thats way more scary.
Mum is right if you want to do something you will find a way, have a money box or tin you can not open and put a few coins in each day, its amazing how fast you can save doing this. I recal mum saving to go to Egypt over two years a few dollars at a time, it was a huge efort but she had always wanted to go and she found a way of achieving this. So often at work people say I do OK because I travel but I don't smoke, gamble and drink rarely. It depends on your priorities at the end of the day.
You have to live and you have to treat yourself from time to time.
ATM from a quick glance weekend of 16 April
SFO to LAX Return $118
LAS to LAX Return $150
DFW to LAX Return $249
OKC to LAX Return $347
SLC to LAX Return $209 |
This is BTW my chart i saved 3 years to go to Egypt
It is quite old this chart but is in my Special box:)

...and with you already being in southwestern Connecticut, that works out to about 60-90 minutes travel time at the most, yes? Heck, if that's the case, there's this little town called Trenton Ontario an hour and a half east of Toronto that would be a perfect spot! [joke ]
A location that's just a little more centrally located would better serve to evenly distribute the effort needed to participate among those who would be likely to show interest. Being too far to the north or south would probably defeat the 'within a day's drive' factor for many ...which would be a deal-breaker for most (and since we're not talking a ton'a folks to begin with, that in itself could make for a 'non-starter' overall).
IMHO... |

| I like the Mount Airy, NC suggestion. Lynchburg isn't very far away. On my way back, I could visit The Tanner. |

...it does have a way of 'growing' on you, doesn't it?
I will be heading down that way in about a week's time and I'll be posting a first hand account of my visit here on the WSBBS.
If any of you are giving some serious thought to what is being proposed, I'll do my best to provide you with whatever information you might need to determine whether or not this would be a suitable (and practical) venue for a friendly low-cost gathering at some point in the not-so-distant (summer/autumn?) future.
More to follow...

Depending on the 'migration paths' of those who may decide to get a piece of this, y'never know what car-pooling opportunties might present themselves...

As promised, here's the first (Day 1) batch of pics from this weekend's recce of 'Mayberry' (Mount Airy, North Carolina).
My GPS display immediately prior to my 6:30am departure from Toronto this morning (the total driving distance and total driving time estimations were 'bang on' [I love my Garmin]):
Soaking up my Vitamin D this afternoon in the 'Subie Solarium' somewhere on the West Virginia Turnpike:
Any 2nd of April that a Canadian can comfortably wear shorts is a great 2nd of April:
Various pics taken while enroute:
...and, at about 7pm this evening, the faithful Subie delivered me to this weekend's final destination:
More pics to follow tomorrow evening...
...I love roadtrips! |

Without exception, every Mount Airy resident who I've encountered so far here has - in true 'Mayberry' fashion - been extremely friendly!
Here are some pics that I took while 'seeing the sights' downtown this afternoon (this evening I'll be checking out a night-spot or two):

Trees in full blossom and it's barely the first week of April ...how great is that??!?
In the event that there is a WSBBS gathering in Mount Airy at some point in the future, the 'Quality Inn' here - with its reasonably priced and good quality rooms - gets my personal nod.
Although the hotel itself is far enough away from the historic downtown district (a 5 to 10 minute car ride) that you need a car to get there, it is within easy walking distance of plenty of eating and shopping spots.

The combination of a digital camera, a netbook computer and WiFi internet access has a way of bringing 'sharing' (in almost real time and to anyone on the planet) to a whole new level...
...very 'cool' indeed.
