...sure!
Just be sure to show them some 'Andy Griffith Show' re-runs beforehand so they can better appreciate the significance of your destination!

Okay folks, to 'stoke the fire' just a little more, Google the following phrase to get a feel for some of the small-town local atmosphere:
snappy lunch pork chop sandwich

I see someone is getting really worked up over this.
Hell, I hope you are able to pull it off. However,
I wouldn't set myself up for too much disappointment...
...just being logical
My situation is this, unable to travel for the foreseeable future,
unless something pretty awful happens...
Didn't want to disappoint anyone
Good luck |

Personally, I was thinking along the lines of somewhere a little more 'centrally located' (further south) to provide an equal opportunity to all of those in our timezone who would likely be interested in something like this... |

As I mentioned a couple of posts back, this particular destination has been on my radar for awhile now ...long before it was ever floated in as a consideration for something like what is being discussed here.
My visit in April will be happening regardless and was never intended to be anything more than a personal self-indulgent roadtrip that I'll be doing on my own (the kind of thing I enjoy doing from time to time). Any subsequent trip - be it to there or elsewhere - that's brought about due to a gathering of folks who frequent this BBS would be 'gravy' and will have whatever legs - or not - that people may choose to give to it...
...me, I'll be getting my pork chop sandwich at Snappy Lunch in April and will be happier than a pig in a hamburger bun with coleslaw 'no matter' (and no worries).

I won't bore you with the normal "grits" story...
But the South and NC is BBQ country.
Hey, they also have BBQ at Snappy |

From everything I've read (and seen) online about 'Snappy Lunch', I reckon I'll be showing up shortly after they start serving lunch around mid to late morning on whatever day I end up hunting down one of their famous pork chop sandwiches...
They seem to have an almost daily midday lunch crowd made up of locals and tourists alike and - with their closing before 2pm each day (and not open at all on Sundays) - the 'window of opportunity' could be narrow for someone who's only in town for a day or two ...and who likes to avoid line-ups if at all possible.
| Quote: | "...Those of us who grew up on the Andy Griffith Show may find a bit of nostalgia with the program which still airs on TV Land. The show was based in Mayberry, which is a town created from Andy Griffith’s own childhood in Mt Airy, North Carolina . Mt Airy takes great pride in their favorite son, with thousands of visitors a year coming to visit this sleepy town nestled in the mountains along the Virginia border. One of the top destinations in “Mayberry” is the Snappy Lunch restaurant.
Snappy Lunch was first mentioned in an Andy Griffith episode called “Andy the Matchmaker,” in which Andy tells Barney that they should grab a bite at the Snappy Lunch. It is a restaurant that Andy Griffith often took lunch at as a boy, where he often opted for a hot dog and bottle of pop, reasonably priced at fifteen cents. Snappy Lunch is Mt Airy’s oldest restaurant, dating back to 1923. They are famous for their pork chop sandwich, which is a favorite for tourists. The proprietor told me that she likes the burgers, but in true tourist fashion, I opted for the pork chop sandwich.
One might ask what exactly a pork chop sandwich is. In the south, it is not uncommon to find pork chop sandwiches which are nothing more than a fried pork chop served on two slices of bread. They are a tricky sandwich to navigate as the bone is left in on this particular version of the sandwich. However, the pork chop sandwich at Snappy Lunch is unlike anything I have ever eaten. If you can picture a tenderized pork loin cooked on the griddle inside a pancake, you have a good start. Take your pork pancake and stick it on a hamburger bun with chili sauce, slaw, onions, lettuce and tomato and you have the Snappy Lunch pork chop sandwich.
You will find the Snappy Lunch located at 125 North Main Street in Mt Airy, NC. There is parking along the street in the historically preserved downtown area. I found a spot to park up the street, walking a short distance past Opie’s Candy Store and Floyd’s Barbershop before reaching my destination. Entering Snappy Lunch involves taking a step back in time. The wooden floors and booth tables take you back to a simpler time. The walls are covered with photographs of celebrities that have visited the restaurant over the years, with a heavy emphasis on stills from the Andy Griffith Show. A griddle facing the street was not in use the day I was there, but on a Saturday you might find pork chop sandwiches being cooked, visible through a window overlooking Main Street . The pork chop sandwich runs $4.00.
The menu at Snappy Lunch is not tremendously involved. A short breakfast menu includes egg plates with bacon, sausage, tenderloin or country ham, served with a biscuit or toast. These plates run just over three dollars. A variety of biscuits are available in the neighborhood of two dollars with a variety of meat selections. A cup of coffee runs $1.15. The lunch menu offers a variety of sandwiches. Aside from the pork chop sandwich, you can grab a BLT, Boiled ham, bologna, burgers, grilled cheese, ham and cheese, hot dogs and sausage sandwiches. These items are mostly less than two dollars. Snappy Lunch does not sell fries, but chips will only set you back another fifty cents per bag. The prices are still reasonable for a popular tourist attraction…which probably explains the large number of local clientele that appeared to be dining during the winter weekday I visited.
The pork chop sandwich was good. It was an unusual flavor combination to say the least. The sweetness of the slaw and pancake batter was much different from the salty breaded pork chop sandwich I expected. It came to the table wrapped in paper accompanied by a drink (free refills) served in a syrofoam cup. The simple menu, lack of plates and silverware and comfortable atmosphere seemed like a culinary time machine. No frills, just good food. The service was also excellent. While dining alongside a busy lunch crowd, my styrofoam drink cup never got empty. The staff were friendly and efficient. The waitresses brought home that Mayberry feel with perfection.
I enjoyed my gastric trip down memory lane. The pleasant atmosphere of Snappy Lunch felt like it came straight out of the Andy Griffith Show. The clientele was a mixture of tourists and regulars, combined to create a bustling crowd, some stopping by for a quick lunch...others visiting for the nostalgia. I don't know if I would regularly order the pork chop sandwich. Is was an interesting and enjoyable food encounter, but it was also a meal I wouldn't necessarily eat often. For posterity's sake, I had to do it. And I certainly don't regret it. Snappy Lunch was an enjoyable experience, friendly staff, a decent meal, normal prices and throwback atmosphere combined to make this a definite waypoint for any trans-Carolina trip. I would give Snappy Lunch four and a half stars out of a possible five. I'll round up for the database..."

My Skiing forum friends and I get together from time to time out of ski season and we always pick one of the major flight hubs as they are generally hubs for all forms of transport.
The great thing in the US like here in Australia is there are many discount fares on sites such as Priceline, I flew all over the US on my two trips very cheaply, much cheaper than I could drive.
Having flown over 400 times its like catching a bus and the fear of flying is one I can never understand, I can tell you some very scary stories in my flights, upside down aircraft, aborted landings, missing the runway etc but then again I crossed a road in Veitnam on foot and thats way more scary.
Mum is right if you want to do something you will find a way, have a money box or tin you can not open and put a few coins in each day, its amazing how fast you can save doing this. I recal mum saving to go to Egypt over two years a few dollars at a time, it was a huge efort but she had always wanted to go and she found a way of achieving this. So often at work people say I do OK because I travel but I don't smoke, gamble and drink rarely. It depends on your priorities at the end of the day.
You have to live and you have to treat yourself from time to time.
ATM from a quick glance weekend of 16 April
SFO to LAX Return $118
LAS to LAX Return $150
DFW to LAX Return $249
OKC to LAX Return $347
SLC to LAX Return $209 |

Mt Airy is a good location, I even have a cute Mt.
Airy story...
(well, it's a "you had to be there story")
I know of some preachers from there.
These are full gospel, congregational holiness, pentecostal
bible believing word of God type preachers.
So, don't choke on that pork-chop sandwich unless you want
some real hands-on experience
I am serious |

...and with you already being in southwestern Connecticut, that works out to about 60-90 minutes travel time at the most, yes? Heck, if that's the case, there's this little town called Trenton Ontario an hour and a half east of Toronto that would be a perfect spot! [joke ]
A location that's just a little more centrally located would better serve to evenly distribute the effort needed to participate among those who would be likely to show interest. Being too far to the north or south would probably defeat the 'within a day's drive' factor for many ...which would be a deal-breaker for most (and since we're not talking a ton'a folks to begin with, that in itself could make for a 'non-starter' overall).
IMHO... |

| I like the Mount Airy, NC suggestion. Lynchburg isn't very far away. On my way back, I could visit The Tanner. |

...it does have a way of 'growing' on you, doesn't it?
I will be heading down that way in about a week's time and I'll be posting a first hand account of my visit here on the WSBBS.
If any of you are giving some serious thought to what is being proposed, I'll do my best to provide you with whatever information you might need to determine whether or not this would be a suitable (and practical) venue for a friendly low-cost gathering at some point in the not-so-distant (summer/autumn?) future.
More to follow...
