Ain't that the truth.
Last time coming in from Dallas, landing in Newark, just about hit the tarmac, last minute forced acceleration back into the air.
There was another plane on the ground crossing our landing.....always a grand adventure. Twisted Evil

Of course I would go if I had the money! I went over 2000 miles to see Bill didn't I?? Doesn't look like I'll have the cash to do it again, but it was amazing.

I can relate to this. One pre Christmas while visiting My daughter in Oklahoma. I was waiting on the tarmac at Newark, to Cross over the runway as you mentioned, I had a window seat, and to my horror, ( was side on to the landng approach) I could see in the air approaching the said run way, the headlights of 9 planes. I have never forgotten this and we had to cross over with these 9 planes approaching. I gather there would have been room but one tiny error, and you would be History. picture that 9 headlights in the approach.

Flying in the US is not for the faint of heart:)

Daisy, you're not serious, are you? Shocked

The only way I can afford food for the rest of the month is if I don't pay my income taxes this month. I'm assuming at some point I'm going to be in a heck of a lot of trouble for that, but I can't let my family go hungry.

There are a lot of people in this world who have no money for travel. It's a luxury for many of us, who have lost jobs, or businesses, due to the poor economy.

Well, for what it's worth, I think that at the core of this particular thread (anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) was the idea to explore the possibility of creating a low-cost opportunity (perhaps two tanks of gas and a night in a hotel) for some of us in the Eastern time zone to break bread together in an informal and relaxed setting ...nothing requiring a lot of planning or necessarily taking vacation time from work ...and certainly nothing that someone would need to purchase a plane ticket for.

Don't let the mention of Bill's annual get-together on the we$t coa$t muddy the water here...

I'm thinking carpooling too.
Shoe horn a marksman, an artificial
and a figure skating mom into a mid-size sedan on a road trip to Mayberry.
Engaging conversation to be sure.

We start at Hill Island.

Next time you're at Newark on a stop over let me know. I live 20 miles from there, and would welcome the opportunity to take you out to lunch. (or dinner, breakfast, whatever)

I live on an approach pattern to the airport, loads of plane traffic overhead. High enough that the noise doesn't get to you, yet there are always planes overhead.

Y'know, there could very well be 'ethically acceptable' carpool/convoy potential here ...given a likely convergence of routes should this quaint little soirée take place at the proposed venue.

I've got this vague picture starting to form in my mind of Nostromo and Debb making their way down in a single vehicle from western Quebec/Eastern Ontario, through central New York state and into PA, with me coming down from Toronto through western New York state (on the opposite end of Lake Ontario) ...our routes, given a little pre-calculation of departure times, intersecting at some point in PA where we could meet up for a bit of mid-trip lunch before continuing south toward Virginia.

That 'lunch' in PA could be a handy spot for Tina to join up with us and hitch a ride with me for the last half of the drive in a two-car/four-person convoy down to NC (the four of us being where the 'ethically acceptable' part comes in Wink ).

Hmmm... I smell a plan a brewin'...

Cool

...and I was serious about doing an early April 'advance recce' of Mount Airy (it's on my 'to do' calendar regardless of the outcome of our discussions here).

I've actually toyed with the idea of visiting there for quite awhile now, so if what we're chatting about here should come to pass at some point during the coming months (summer/fall) and it make use of the same location, y'all will have the benefit of my 'reporting back' in a few weeks with some firsthand info on the venue itself ...heck, I'll be bringing my digicam and netbook along, so there will certainly be an Orlando-esque WSBBS multi-media travelogue posted here while I'm there to use as a potential 'preview'!

Cool

(I can hear the 'wheels of serious interest' starting to turn in several of you!)

...sure!

Just be sure to show them some 'Andy Griffith Show' re-runs beforehand so they can better appreciate the significance of your destination!

Okay folks, to 'stoke the fire' just a little more, Google the following phrase to get a feel for some of the small-town local atmosphere:

snappy lunch pork chop sandwich

If you're interested in getting a (rather well put together) visitors' guide for Mount Airy online in .pdf format or snail-mailed to you, go to this link:

An example of the lodgings available (where I'll be staying during my visit in April):

I see someone is getting really worked up over this.

Hell, I hope you are able to pull it off. However,
I wouldn't set myself up for too much disappointment...
...just being logical

My situation is this, unable to travel for the foreseeable future,
unless something pretty awful happens...

Didn't want to disappoint anyone Idea

Good luck Idea

Personally, I was thinking along the lines of somewhere a little more 'centrally located' (further south) to provide an equal opportunity to all of those in our timezone who would likely be interested in something like this...

As I mentioned a couple of posts back, this particular destination has been on my radar for awhile now ...long before it was ever floated in as a consideration for something like what is being discussed here.

My visit in April will be happening regardless and was never intended to be anything more than a personal self-indulgent roadtrip that I'll be doing on my own (the kind of thing I enjoy doing from time to time). Any subsequent trip - be it to there or elsewhere - that's brought about due to a gathering of folks who frequent this BBS would be 'gravy' and will have whatever legs - or not - that people may choose to give to it...

...me, I'll be getting my pork chop sandwich at Snappy Lunch in April and will be happier than a pig in a hamburger bun with coleslaw 'no matter' (and no worries).

Wink
