I just got back from the Veterinarian and our little carpetshark, George was diagnosed with Adrenal cancer.....
He was showing symptoms of it over the last 4 months and the Dr. confirmed it today...treatment is out of the question as it involves surgery to remove the adrenals off the kidneys, and medical treatments that can cost as much as $5,000 every few months...
I am dreading telling Samantha when she comes home from school. He is her favorite....along with Mollie.....

I am so sorry to hear that DianaG. I have never owned ferrets and didn't realize how costly their medical expenses can be.
No wonder some companies are offering pet insurance. |

A lot of those "Pet" insurances are a big sham...we tried to get it for our fuzzles and they wanted $300 PER fuzzie upfront and then so much per month...they would pay for most of the well being checks but if they get a cancer....then they pay 1/4th of the bill and YOU pay the rest.....

I know...we love them to pieces and they still leave us in a short time......The rest of Georges life will be spent in play, eating and much loves and hugs here....and when his time comes he will be in my arms as he goes over the Rainbow Bridge
The Vet also said that Smokie has the same thing as she now is losing her hair, and now has sores on her back this morning....I saw it this morning after I came back with George and I was putting them in the play pen together...Smokie is the old lady of the bunch...she's ten and she has lived a LONG and happy life...she gave both of them a prognosis of 1 year.....
God bless the little guys!!
90% of all ferrets develop this disease after the third year of life.......
what a high mortality rate for them!

I agree. Like any other type of insurance, people, pet or otherwise, one needs to research the companies, and then sometimes hope for the best.
My opinion is that if pet insurance gets a strong hold, it will just cause overall pet care to skyrocket. This, I firmly believe is what has happened in the human medical arena. |

Veterinary costs are already comparable to the SCAM of Human Medical costs...$750 and up to clean a dogs teeth and $550 + for a cat?
There is NOTHING that is stopping the full Flood of GREED anymore. |

That was what regulation was for. The greedy rich (and their corporations) didn't like being regulated and their greed controlled, so they fought for and achieved deregulation. Now us ordinary people are paying the price, as they gobble up all of the resources and wealth.
On the main topic, the researchers are finding more and more connections between viruses and bacteria and things like cancer. The most recent finding was a possible connection between Parkinson's and the bacteria that causes ulcers (and stomach cancer).

It would be nice if they could find the virus or bacteria that causes the adrenal cancer, and create a vaccine against it. I also wish they could find vaccines for things like Feline Infectious Leukemia and so on... even a treatment that might have saved my beloved Malachi kitty's life (when he got a blood clot which was caused by a virus or bacteria).
Diana, I hope that things go well for you, and that if George and Smokie don't get better, that it is peaceful and you are prepared (and for peace for you). I'm told that loosing a little one is much like loosing a child, and I can believe it (I still grieve when I think of Malachi although it's been almost 11 years, and I still grieve over our Needles when I think of her, although it's been four years). |

Yes it is like losing a child...but I have lost 4 babies in utero (2 girls and a set of twin boys) and that is the hardest to lose.....i miss them and think of my two legged and four legged babies nearly every day that they have been gone....

Hey, Diana, sorry you've been ill. That's bad enough without having the little ones sick as well.
I caught the virus going around, and that brought my blood disorder out of remission. So, been better. Just praying it behaves itself, and goes back into remission. Stupid uppity blood....... |
