as indeed is the utter incapacity of this county to host a major international event, due to its inferiority complex, born of a trauma being the skinny and weakling bro to a beefy United States and a colonial outpost to the United Kingdom, whose Queen smiles happily from Canadian postage stamps.

Is is just me, or does Pravda sound a bit butt-hurt about something?

The abject cruelty of Canadian soldiers
My oh my yes indeed. Why ... just look at this photo blow up of cruel Canadian actions in Afghanistan.
Note the school in the background that the cruel Canadian soldier keeps open every day by keeping the Taliban high in the hills.
Note the road in the foreground that the cruel Canadian risks his life to mine sweep everyday, so those kids can ride their bikes to and from school.
The horror.

well, their hockey team took a pretty bad loss.
Plushenko needs to learn how the code of points system works.
The two best performances did not medal. Patrick Chan need to be perfect in his free skate but he flipped off his edge landing his second triple axle.
Johnny Weir had a beautiful skate but he didn't get high component scores because he has level 3 spins and did a lot of skating on two feet... beautiful programme though.
Plushenko has to understand that th equad may score big points... but the setup for the jump steals 20-30 seconds of choreographer just to set up that jump. He's lucky. His component score was quite inflated. Although his technical score was fairly accurate. Lycesek is the skater that knows how to work the code of points... along with some brilliant choreography, he was able to squeak out positive grade of execution out of every field move, jump and spin.
Again, with level 4 spins (spins that have at least 2 change of edge, 3 changes of position, centered and fast with a minimum 12 rotations) scores big points... toss in display of flexibility and originality and you increase the GOE - Grade of Execution. Superior spirals that cover the length of the ice on both edges and endure 4 seconds or more with extension and control and again .... level 4.
Jumps that are not telegraphed but happen out of footwork or field moves and again... positive GOE...
The new Gen of skaters know how to work the COP... that's why Plushenko who comes from the old system of subjective judging can't understand why he didn't win... all jumps no content... not too mention... no speed... he's very lucky to have won the silver. Obviously, the judges gave him some inflated component scores...
but for my money, it should have been Lycesek, Weir, Chan.
I'm not alone in my assessment. |

Officials to blame for Russian Olympics flop: Rodnina

MOSCOW - Triple Olympic champion Irina Rodnina has launched a scathing attack on the head of the Russian figure skating federation, Valentin Piseyev, blaming him for his team's dismal performance at Vancouver.
"I consider Piseyev to be personally responsible for our failure in figure skating at Vancouver," said Rodnina, who won all of the competitions where she performed during her career, in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda daily.
"The national federation's top officials shouldn't sit pompously at the stands during the competitions but should contact their colleagues, referees, to form relations with them and to be a part of the interantional federation's life," Rodnina said.
"But serious people in the figure skating world do not want to deal with him. They have no respect for him," she added.
"Meanwhile, Piseyev's reputation is not just the reputation of a single person as he represents the entire country."
Rodnina said that she believed that Piseyev should resign after his team's disastrous performance in Vancouver, where Russia are set to finish without an Olympic gold medal in figure skating for the first time in 50 years.
"Piseyev should resign after the disaster in Vancouver but I do not believe in miracles," Rodnina said.
"I hope that the federation will elect somebody else for the post at its special meeting later this year. We need a fresh and unbiased person in the post. And the new federation head should rathre be a highly-skilled manager than a figure skating specialist."
Rodnina also blamed Leonid Tyagachev, the head of Russia's Olympic Committee (ROC), for the poor Russian showing at the 2010 Olympics, saying he should be held responsible for the country's failures in the early days of the Games.
"Tyagachev was in charge of spending the budget funding for the preparation of our Olympic team for the Games. And he is personally responsible for every rouble and every dollar from the country's budget."
"The entire country was shocked with our athletes performances in the first eignt days of the Games and, I believe, we have the right to ask him (Tyagachev) to give an account on all of the ROC expenses in the recent years."
