I adopted two African Dwarf Frogs today. They are both males. One is stocky and light and the other is thin and dark. They are always hugging each other. I named them Bill and Leonard...

Congratulations!!! I'm not familiar with those, i'm a bit more into other herps. My personal favorite are the north american garters. I caught some gorgeous ones last spring, they were in an area where there were dozens of people illegally charging around with atv's, so my kid and I took the garters and relocated them about a quarter miles away where we hoped they might be safer.

What are your other pets? are you familiar with the chitrid virus that is killing off so many of our north amercian herps? I read that it's already caused many specied of poison arrow frogs to vanish completely.

Bill and Leonard are the only herps I have ever had. Most of my other pets have been of the canine variety. Right now I have an 13 year old black lab mix who I am sure won't be with me much longer. I don't know how much the frogs will ease that loss when it happens, but at least I will have something to lavish attention upon.

Good job relocating the garters. I support anyone who is looking after living creatures.

Oh how fun! I had a couple of African dwarf frogs that lived almost 7 years. They were named Mulder and Scully.

I really enjoyed them a great deal, and it was sad when they passed. We had originally purchased them to put into our tropical fish tank, but learned that the water level should be no more than 8 inches deep, so they got their own tank. We also didn't pump oxygen into the tank since they are surface breathers, and the bubbles seemed to bother them. We did have to provide a heater, since we keep our house cool.

They are fun to feed. Watching them gulp down the blood worms and brine shrimp was something I enjoyed each day.

Bill and Leonard just acted out a scene from the Star Trek episode "Patterns of Force." Leonard stood on Bill's shoulders until Bill backed away and he fell off.

Then I gave them each a freeze dried Regulan blood worm as a treat. Bill didn't know what that strange thing was in his tank and it looked like he was barking at it. Finally he got close enough to tell it was food and scarfed it down. Leonard ignored his and Bill kept looking at him like, 'Are you going to eat that?' Finally Bill ate that one too.

These frogs are more fun than I would have imagined. Of course, it helps that I have an overactive imagination.

I put a picture of the real Bill behind their tank and they both swam over to look at it with their little arms across each others shoulders. It was so cute.

Froggie, my oldest and Favorite..used to ride the 8 inch white Goldfish, like he thought Pigger was a (sea)Horse.....it was really funny. They are really affectionate. Whenever I was putting in shrimp, or something, Froggie would climb onto my hand and I would hold it in the water and stroke his back with my finger...He Loved it.....I MISS HIM.

I am slowly working to earn their trust so they won't be afraid of me. I would like to be able to hand feed them.

It would appear that Bill is actually Willamina - he/she laid eggs this morning. Here is a photo of them. Leonard is in the front with Bill/Willamina behind.

It appeared that Leonard was male as they were being quite, um, friendly, while the eggs were being laid. He was, shall we say, riding piggy back for about an hour.

And I was told that they were both males. I wondered though since once I did research it said that the females are usually a little lighter and larger. That describes Bill/Willamina.

Will do. However, what I read said that in captivity they usually mistake the eggs for food and eat them.

Frogs can spontaneously change gender. Its possible Bill and Leonard (a.k.a. Willy and Lenny, a.k.a. Wilhelmina and Leonard) started as two males, then, things became interesting.

Humans can also change gender, albeit not spontaneously.

Frogs change gender with fertility; humans change gender without fertility.

Evidently Bill and Leonard know something we don’t.

I wasn't able to save any of the eggs from the first batch, but they did it again this morning and I was ready. I rescued about 20 eggs and placed them into the small tank the frogs originally came in. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I have 4 tadpoles that are almost six weeks old. (Out of 30 eggs.) Most died off the first couple of weeks. These seem to be healthy and happy. They are using their back legs like little rudders when they swim.

They are only about an inch long, so it is still difficult to get a very clear picture.

You may not realize it, but what you accomplished is actually HARD to do. Many Longtime caretakers never get to have tads....

Keep up with the PICS...I luv it
