It seems that every time we turn around, another beloved celebrity is passing away. Today, it is with heavy heart that we report yet another celebrity death. Rest in peace Gidget, the Chihuahua who starred in a series of Taco Bell commercials and made famous the phrase "ˇYo quiero Taco Bell!"
Gidget died of a stroke Tuesday at the ripe old age of 15, People Pets reports. She'd lived in comfortable semiretirement since the heyday of the Taco Bell advertising campaign, occasionally making cameo appearances (hawking insurance alongside the GEICO gecko in a 2002 commercial and playing the mother of Reese Witherspoon's Chihuahua, Bruiser, in the sequel to "Legally Blonde").
In the grand tradition of celebrities such as Marlene Dietrich who went before her, Gidget played against type in the Taco Bell ads, portraying a male dog voiced by Argentine American actor Carlos Alazraqui. A few years later, Alazraqui landed the role for which he's best known: Deputy James Garcia on Comedy Central's "Reno 911." But others associated with the ad campaign weren't so lucky. Earlier this year, the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that the creators of the Chihuahua character hadn't been properly compensated for their work, and Taco Bell was ordered to pay $42 million.
Gidget's trainer, Sue Chipperton, described the diminutive dog as a consummate professional on the set in an interview earlier this year with People Pets. But, she said, Gidget had been the victim of typecasting, which limited her career choices (or, rather, Chipperton's choices on her behalf). Although her career waned in recent years, Gidget (and her catchphrase) remained a well-known pop-culture footnote of the 1990s. "She made so many people happy," Chipperton told People Pets.
As Horatio put it so memorably, "Now cracks a noble heart." Good night, sweet prince(ss). We'll miss you and your unerring ability to make us crave fast food.

| My thought is no news is good news usually. My daughter's boyfriend's cat still hasn't been found and his parents did do the drive around and post pics but still no kitty. |

I didn't ask the daughter's boyfriend if they checked there. They may have, I don't know. |

I'll keep my fingers crossed!
Our little kitty, Pumpkin, passed away on Thursday. She was doing pretty badly that morning, and I gave her enough meds to ease the transition. I have to admit I'm pretty sad. I miss her....... |

I"m sorry to hear about Pumpkin's passing on Cat.... .....I am glad tho that she had a good home with you and she lived tothe fullest, and that you showed mercy to her in her last hours on this earth..

Hi Cat,
I have been nursing an eye infection and just got on the computer today. I was saddened to hear about Pumpkin Kitty.
My Ruthie Muffin is doing much better but is still pretty frail. She has always been a frail cat. I was always afraid to pick her up when she was a kitten because she seemed so delicate I was afraid of crushing her.
She spends at least a couple of hours curled up in my lap every day. |

Thank you so much for the condolences, everyone. It means a lot.
She was the sweetest kitty. And a real beauty. I suspect she was at least part Maine Coon. She was a calico, with long fur, and the longest whiskers I've ever seen on a cat. And she purred right up until the end. She had been lingering on, and hadn't eaten for about 4 days. She started throwing up bile, and we were afraid she would choke. She was so weak. So, I gave her enough sedatives to pretty much put her out. She went and sat out under her favorite tree for the last time, and pretty much just was out of it after that. I hated like mad giving her the sedatives, but I couldn't stand the thought of having her take that "trip to the vets". Hubby asked if I wanted to go and get another kitty (we still have one cat, and our dog), but it's too soon.
I'm glad that Ruthie Muffin and the carpet sharks are doing better. |

The New York Times editorial board is starting to turn out consistently favorable columns on animal issues. Wednesday's (Sept 2, pg 22) editorial on the wolf hunt is an example. Headed "Wolf Season Begins," the editorial opens with:
"The first legal wolf hunt in decades in the continental United States began at dawn in Idaho on Tuesday. Legal wolf hunting will begin in Montana on Sept. 15. All told, some 295 wolves are likely to be killed in these two states in the next two months. Idaho has set a quota of 220, Montana 75."
The editorial tells us that the hunts are misguided, and explains why, then ends on this strong note:
"To us, the wolf hunt in Idaho and Montana seems indecent. Hunters want to kill wolves because wolves kill elk -- and the human hunters want the elk. A second reason is a love of killing things. A third is an implacable, and unjustified, hostility to the wolf. It is well past time to let gray wolves find their own balance in the Rockies."

The same paper, also on Wednesday September 2, included a column by Timothy Egan headed "Hunting Wolves, and Men." It discusses chilling presidential assassination jokes made by Rex Rammell, a candidate for governor of Idaho, in the context of supporting the wolf hunt. Egan describes Rammell as a naturephobe and he writes about him:
"Until 2007, he made his living in elk ranching, which he calls 'a novel agricultural enterprise.' Imagine this majestic creature at dawn in a high mountain meadow, in all its glory. Now imagine it inside a fenced-off plot while someone tries to domesticate it into stupidity. That's elk ranching."
