Even crappy films make the big bucks.

I'm not impressed by much of anything apparently.

Gornman that is a version done by digital artist Gabe Koerner of Trekkie 1 and 2 fame.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ft7WILemLU

It's definitely more in line with the original. As for the success of the film....well, with Paramount spending $140 million to make it, not to mention countless millions on promotion, it could be "Freddy got Fingered" and break records. Then again, there is bound to be a sufficient amount of buzz, negative and positive. The trailer coming out so early, I don't know the affect. Paramount is going to go all out, unlike with most of the TOS and TNG films where they barely spent a dime to promote. The images and action, and the name Star Trek will sell the film. Not the actors (most are not well known) or J.J. Abrams.

Also, can we pre-define "flop" and "hit"?

A "flop" is a film that fails to break even, or if it does break even, any profit on the returns is relatively minuscule, below studio expectations.

A "hit" is a film that manages to get steady healthy returns at the box office, to such an extent that the studio gains large profits over the initial outlay costs.

I base my assumption that the movie will succeed on Abrams' proven expertise at marketing, the wider audience it is aiming for beyond traditional Trek fans, the presence of Nimoy, audience curiosity, word that this is Trek on an epic scale like never before, early press showings where the critics have been glowing, and I could go on and on...

Morgram is basing his assumption that it will be a flop mainly on whether it fits into his private set of expectations of what Trek should be. That is not a broad spectrum to draw a conclusion for the potential failure of something. Take Transformers for example. I hated all things to do with Transformers long before the rubbish movie came out, but I was proven right that it would be a blockbuster, after arguing with Morgram, who said it would... flop... Laughing

I define a hit as nothing less than a blockbuster. I am holding you to your wager, Harry. This will flop.

i'm going to agree with...

Harry

The bottom line is the determining factor.

There's no accounting for taste in movies...

afterall, how do you explain me... a middle aged woman in sensible shoes watching tv fare such as Trailer Park Boys and movies like the Dukes of Hazzard or Blades of Glory?

Sometimes it's not about the emmy or academy winning performance... just give me a reason to laugh and smile before I hit the hay is all I ask.

It looks all wrong. There's continuity and then there's JJ Abrams continuity, TOS uniforms, characters but a different ship maybe it's a parallel universe. Wink

Exactly! That is the bottom line. Continuity matters to real trekkers.

I will not be getting any screencaps from this as my desire was predicated on seeing a glorious cgi reincarnation of our beloved NCC-1701 tos Enterprise, not that abomination.

Here's a bet. If the movie is a flop, I will never post here again. If the movie is a major hit, you will promise to do the same.
You`re on!

Let's up the ante! The winner of the bet gets to pick which TV Land shows the loser has to watch. maybe like a TV Land marathon torture session. The loser has to say or do something that is NOT pre-1920's, like flying in a dirigible that's filled with helium instead of hydrogen.

Would anyone change their mind about the movie if Tanner was in it? He was in the newest James Bond movie!

Uh, as a long time Trekker, I can tell you that the new movies success will not be set by the fans alone. Abrams has repeatedly said that the film is aimed beyond the fanbase. My prediction: This movie will beat all profit records set by Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, which was the movie that had the greatest appeal beyond the fray.

I think Morgram can't handle the Helium, like the fellow in Scanners (the pre-1920's version).

Well, hopefully it appeals to the fan base because the way things are people aren't going to the movies as much these days. Who knows if the delay was a good idea. Maybe there won't be as high as sales or maybe there won't be as many movies to compete.

Economic turmoil takes its toll on Hollywood

I really don't care what they do in the film, continuity wise, it doesn't bother me. But I may have to give up on the franchise, even if its a wonderful movie, because I simply will not sit by and have newbies and other kiss-butts telling me it is better than Wrath of Khan, or The Voyage Home, or even The Motion Picture.

I tell ya what this is really all about. They got rid of Kirk. Now they`re gonna get rid of old line trek fandom BY COMMITTING THE ULTIMATE BLASPHEMY, redefining the characters. They`re gonna turn Kirk into a sissybutt! THAT will certainly cause old line trekkers to give this a wide berth.
