My husband and I built a pond in the backyard. The path was pre-existing and the challenge was to blend the pond and the path so that it looks as though it was always there. It's stocked with about 2 dozen goldfish (comets and shubukens).
It was finished just before Canadian Thanksgiving. |

Although we do have raccoons in the forest, they aren't the problem.
While sitting out on our swing one evening, my husband, JP, and I witnessed a sawhet owl catch his dinner. The owl scoped out the pond for over an hour, sitting on the fence, then in the tree before swooping down for takeout.
The whole time not 10 feet from us. I can tell you, we barely breathed the entire time and we were in awe to witness such an event. I have never felt so honoured to lose a 29 cent goldfish. He visited again a few nights later but was not successful.
We also witnessed 2 visits by a skunk which could have turned nasty. I had Eddie on my lap and had to hold tight to him while the skunk had a drink before moseying on. The squirrels enjoy the upper basin that feeds the waterfall.
Since the pond is 48 inches deep, we'll be able to overwinter the fish.
