I wonder whats going on in the McCain camp,if there is any finger pointing and blame laying over what went wrong.McCain said he let his supporters down, but i wonder should he really shoulder all the responsibility?

Lovely speech by McCain. Palin.. the Republicans would be nuts to consider her in the future. If McCain had not selected her, he would not have won, but is votes would have been higher. She's poison!

I fell asleep around 8:30 p.m. EST so I didn't get a chance to watch first-hand the end results or the speeches.

However, I didn't need to. I knew it in my bones that this would be the result.

The one ingredient that Barack Obama has that carried the day was his humility. All great leaders possess that trait.

There's a great article entitled Level 5 Leadership: The Triumph of Humility and Fierce Resolve by Jim Collins in the Harvard Business Review that is essential reading.

Obama displays all the traits of a man destined to be a great President.

I was listening to an American saying he can finally stop feeling embarrassed of his President when he travels abroad, no, not strong enough, he can finally feel downright proud of his President!

This is a truly beautiful thing that has happened, for so many reasons.

I'll tell you something funny. Japanese trains are efficient and always on time, but today, as I rushed to get back for the results, I didn't have just one train be delayed, but TWO!!! So, as I stood at the platforms waiting desperately to get home, I was checking for updates on my phone. I've got to tell you, when it was announced he had won, I wanted to scream and shout like a mad man.... Japanese sensibilities held me back from doing so.

Anyhow, I rushed to the nearest booze shop to buy Champagne. I couldn't help but mention Obama to the woman behind the counter. In response, she asked me if he had won, and started jumping and screaming when I informed her he had. She then high-fived me.... Very, very un-Japanese, but beautiful! Let the good times roll!!!!

Why do you think it went so badly for McCain. Was it that he was the wrong choice, was it Palin, was it bad advice, was it that he is ( in many peoples minds) is still too much like George Bush..?

or a combination of all of the above?

1. The negative campaign backfired
2. Not vetting Sarah Palin. She is a lightweight who alienated a lot of people including pro-choicers and gay rights. Her gun toting demeanor didn't sit well with a lot of anti gun people and her own personal situations with the clothing budget, her ex brother in law and her own children were magnified.
3. Bush. Very difficult to be a Republican when the current president has a mere 20% approval rating.
4. Finances. McCain fell behind very early in fundraising.
5. Age and health. There were many who felt McCain's age and health were impediments.
6. Cindy McCain. Her presence, or lack thereof, didn't help. The heiress tag, along with her cool demeanor didn't foster any warm and fuzzy feelings.
7. The wars. Unpopular.
8. The economy. In the tank.
9. Other factors such as not being as photogenic as Obama.
10. Mistakes. The non appearance on a certain talk show, the debate, and, finally, the SNL appearance all seemed to added up negatively.

However, in my opinion, the selection of Sarah Palin was hastily made and compared to Hillary Clinton, her inadequacies were magnified. (Thank you Tina Fey.)

Attack the idea not the person, Gornman.
Take a leaf out of McCain's book and accept defeat with dignity and poise.

well, I'm not celebrating... but I am relieved and satisfied that our neighbours to the south can now move forward. It's been a long 22 months.

As a Canadian, our elections tend to be called, held, and over in usually 3 months or less. 22 months seems like an eternity in comparison - a marathon of sorts with the last man standing.

Now, our Premier of Quebec just anounced a Dec. 8th election. As always, it's another opportunity for the Separatists (aka Parti Quebecois) to try and divide our nation.

Fortunately, I only need to endure 5 weeks of their cries for independence and that Premier Charest will prevail with a majority government this time.

Kennedy wasn't perfect either.

The USA I think has more pomp and circumstance regarding how the elections are run...waste too much money in my opinion.

And Debb, I hope my daughter Lynda can live in your country without too many problems that she can't deal with and then may have to move back to the good ole USA with her two children and her husband in tow. Wink

Unless she's in the Province of Quebec, the only hardship she ought to have is the 6 AM shovelling out of the car... she'll be fine. It's a cold country but we all have warm hearts and hands.

Just remember to tell her... hats and mittens. Don't leave home without 'em.
