Definitely don't dress up my dogs, although the kids did buy hot dog costumes for the doxies to wear on Halloween.
But that's not really a dog in that pic, sort of an overgrown mouse maybe? (j/k) |

| Audrey likes to wear a sweater when she's cold. Would you deny my dog warmth, Gorn? |

In all honesty Jami, this has nothing to do with
a dog's health. You will treat your dog well and we both know it.
The real problem IMO is that too many dog owners treat
their dogs as members of the family/children.
Dogs can be members of the family, they can't be children.
It screws them up |

Abra Ca Dabra! I will now pull a human out of the cup!
People who dress animals up like that are usually using them as accessories for their own outfits.
I for one, am glad that at least the dog isn't being worn around someone's neck like a fox or mink. NOW THAT would really get me riled! |

Dressing one's pet up drives me nuts. In fact, I would imagine my kitty scratching the hell outta me if I tried to dress her up. She's beautiful just as she is.
I am with you on this one Gornie. |

Some people just have too much time ( and money) on their hands. What is missing in their lives ,that they have to substitute animals for children?.Or are Dogs the new fashion, must have ?.With owners like these i feel sorry for the dog.
Considering how many dogs end up being abandoned, each year makes you wonder, what happens when the "cute little doggie" is'nt so cute anymore.

| I've always had big dogs, so haven't thought about it much. Sure I thought it was cute (thought be it silly) when I saw people dressing up their dogs. Then I got Maggie last year. Her fur absorbs water like a sponge. And when she gets wet, she gets cold to the point of shivering. So I did the only practical thing and bought her 2 rain coats. One light one and one heavy one. She wore her light one today and while her paws and head still got wet, she didn't come in soaked nor cold. |

| That's sooo stupid! When we had a tiny dog we did dress her in a dog sweater in the winter when we had to take her outside to do her business, but that's just ridiculous. |

that poor dog looks just well..... stupid!!!! Too over dressed and will probably be overhaeated soon after putting that outfit on. I do know people who treat thier dogs and cats like real kids and it irks me to the core. I don't mind that we cuddle them and give them some nice things, but to treat them fully like a human person...no way. They are an animal and should be cared for and treated as such.
the only time I dressed one of the carpet sharks (ferret) was for Marshall...he had lymphoma and was always cold in here during the winter. We bought him a light sweater to wear when it was cold in the house at night. it was pink and has tiny angel wings on it. Litlle did we know a few weeks later he had real angel wings when he passed away.
We have never dressed our fuzzies up again since but I might have to with Smokie..our elder carpet shark...She has had muscle degeneration from the ant poison she got into in February this year, when she escaped the playpen. She is so cold all the time...poor thing shakes like she is in a high wind...She only weighs 1 pound.....her cage mate Bandit would never put up with the clothes..she's too snooty for that! Beary gets too hot with all the fat and thick fur he has on him so he doesent need clothes...Lily Possum would just rip it off in about 30 seconds...
Now if it was for a photo shoot or for a calender, or for the animal heath like protection from the weather, then dressing up is ok but to dress an animal up all day every day...nope!

I have been watching the special series on the Iditarod dog sled race and noticed the special booties that the dogs wear. I have also known several people with disabilities who have service dogs that wear special harnesses or service packs.
We used to have a weather anchor who had a small dog named, Scud who became a real star during the nightly weather report. Scud would appear in the appropriate outfit for the day... rain slicker, swim suit and sun bonnet, or sweater and ear muffs. There were yearly Scud calendars sold every year and the proceeds went to he animal shelters.

Has anyone ever watched Cesar at work?
In almost every case, the problem isn't the pet, it's the
owner. Again, in almost every case, Cesar has to teach
the owner, this is a dog, NOT a child.
I love the show. I'd love that job |

Some couples cannot have children no matter how hard they try...so they get a puppy or a kitten to compensate...in their eyes the Dog looks cute all dressed up as a child...Would you deny them that?

I'm not in a position to deny anyone of anything and I think
it's strange that's the second time I've been asked that
If you treat a dog as anything other than a dog IMO
it's screws up the pet
That's what I think |

But Audrey's my baby. I mean, I don't dress her up except when she's cold. Then I either put a sweater on her or her t-shirt that says "Trust me, my owner's a Manilow fan." But I still treat her like a child and even though she's deaf I babytalk to her. Carry her like a baby. (Granted, she's got bad arthritis and therefore I have to carry her to places she can't walk to.) I mean, techincally, I fall into your catagory of people who treat their dogs like children. I even say "This is my baby." |

Well... hrmm... ok... I think I have a problem with the actual attire rather than the thought of dogs wearing apparel.
Afterall, when the temperature gets into the freezing zone, we put a faux lambskin jacket on our jacket russell terrier and little boots to protect his paws from ice building up between his toes for his daily walks. Otherwise, he'd become a shut in during the winter months.

I don't have a problem with dogs that dress themselves. However ... cats that look like Hitler??!! Don't get me started. N

And that's a very good opinion!
Our Dog Shannon who is 16 years old has a sweater for Fall and Winter...She also has Cancer but we are having a problem putting her down... I wonder sometimes if it is for her or for us... The Mrs. has always looked at her as a Dog Child... and it seems that old Shannon looks at Maur as a mother figure...
Go figure!

Cesar is awesome! Got a couple of his dvd's (Mastering Leadership series) I'd like to think my husky is better for it. I've gotten compliments on how he doesn't lunge on the leash like many dogs do. He pulls some of course, but I can guarantee that's from not enough exercise (I'm not getting enough either. ). He also listens better than most, though I'd never let him off leash, it's probably already saved his life once.
I'm not above putting a funny hat/outfit on a dog for amusement purposes. Halloween, the aforementioned "weather" dog... very dog specific stuff.
And I'll coat a dog that isn't weather proof yet. During a difficult family transition my beagle got put outside during late fall, having always been an indoor dog she didn't have the coat for it. A 12yr old doesn't have much say over relatives households, so I saved some money and bought her a warm coat and gave her one of my warm blankets to sleep in, in her dog house.
But I never mistake them for people/kids etc.. How can you when you turn around to find them eating horse poop or sniffing someone's fart while wagging their tail? (My cat has the good sense to run away when someone farts.) |
