I'm doing a project for National History Day on Gene Roddenberry and I could use all the help I can get.

I need to explain in my project on how significant Star Trek is to not only me, but to the world. I need evidence, stories, pictures, anything that can help me change the minds of those who think that Star Trek is "just a television show".

Please tell me your feelings or comments about Gene or the show that have changed your life in any way. The more detail, the better.

If you would like to know more about National History Day, check out their official website here: http://www.nationalhistoryday.org/

Thanks so much!!

1. I am much more tolerant of people who are different then me on all levels of life.

2. I have always valued all life forms, but even more so now.

3. I am better at finding solutions to problems that come my way at home or at work.

4. Most importantly, I accept and value myself for who I am and what I can offer to the world around me.

5. I have learned that no matter how far into space mankind gets and no matter how many techno- dudads are invented, people still need to eat and get along with each other.

I grew up in Belfast Northern Ireland - during the 70's and early 1980's - It was a very violent place.

Star Trek took me into a world were it didn't matter about were you came from or what your religious views were and taught me understanding - I was seven when I first entered the Star trek world. I'm now 42.

Although Northern Ireland is a much happier place - the world has still to learn..

Star Trek has always been the frame for the picture of my life.

The values and vision of the future and even cautionary scenarios that Gene Roddenberry instilled in the show and carried through subsequent series have a made an indelible imprint on my character and psyche.

ie: TNG: Inner Light taught me that desertification is a very real, very now, threat to Earth.

TOS: Never let morals get in the way of doing what is right. (everything Kirk)

I can think of 3 things

Communicators used in the 60's show are used today in the form of flip phones, cell phones

Kirk, Spock and other crew members put cartridges into computers that were strikingly similar to 3.5 inch floppys

In the pilot episode with Capt. Pike, an order was transmitted from Starfleet Command to the Enterprise via a device that worked like a fax machine. A piece of paper from the bridge and handed to Capt. Pike-o.

I believe there was a page on the old startrek.com site that describes different local fan clubs and what they were doing. There were quite a few of them that were doing some kind of community/charity work as a group. Since the old site is closed down, I don't know where you would look for this info unless you went to the site for each individual club.

You might start by looking here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trekkie#Activities
which leads you here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STARFLEET_International

Good luck!
