Unlike clothing, you can never get "too fat" for a pair of shoes. That great blouse might not fit you a week from now, but your shoes will.
However, I wouldn't buy shoes from a vending machine anymore then I would online or in a catalogue. I need to try them on, walk around in them, make sure they fit properly.
And lately, I hate shoes. Because of a constant fight between mom and me. I insist because of my weight, my natural clumsiness, and my hyper-flexible ankles, I cannot now, nor will I ever be able to walk in heels. (Keep in mind she wants me to get heels that are a 1/2 inch to maybe 2 inches tall at the most.) She insists I learn. She won't let it go. It's worse then the Bra Wars, when we used to fight over what size bra I should be wearing. It took an expert who messured me before that fight finally ended. It'll take an expert in shoes to prove to mom I'm too fat and clumsy for heels. So right now, I HATE SHOES! |
I can't have heels either. My ankles are too weak. from the time I was a kid I never wore heels. I have a few different pairs for different things: hiking boots, knee-high rubber boots, sneakers, comfortable winter leather shoes (used to be my nice shoes but now they're for work at day-care), sandals, and some dress shoes in brown, black and red. All low heels.

You'll have to be careful of the "experts" as well. All of the shoe salespeople told me (and my parents when I was younger) that my ankles "naturally" "rolled out" and I was always wearing out the outside edge of my shoe soles first. If I didn't do that, the leather/fabric on the outside would eventually give way.
I finally found out quite a few years ago that was a symptom of too-narrow shoes. I had to go an extra size bigger to get shoes wide enough for my feet (sometimes I get lucky and find something a half size bigger that fits), and now the soles wear out evenly, and the outside fabric/leather stays good. They also last much longer- years instead of months.
(On topic- a shoe vending machine. Well, I've seen "hot meal" vending machines, film vending machines, music vending machines- but those things are in a sense "one size fits all". That's not true of shoes!) |

My point though is to have the expert tell mom that me in heels of any height is a pipe dream and to give it up. So we can stop the knock down drag out fights.
My ankles actually do roll out and not cause of too narrow shoes. I have hyper-flexible ankles. It's kind of like being double jointed. They just bend way too much. Mom has them too. I was told by a PE teacher that even if I weighed 97 pounds soaking wet I'd still fall down a lot because of my ankles. Which is another reason I hold firm to the fact I cannot wear heels. Just because mom used to wear them before her back surgery doesn't mean I can. |

Point taken, but the explanation is really quite banal. The climate here in Gothenburg is very wet and they haven't yet learned that it snows in the winter. There is an ineffective sewer system and when it rains or the snow melts there are puddles the size of small lakes and nearly as deep. Also Swedes are big on walking in the woods, a pleasure I have also learned to enjoy. Much more practical with knee-high rubber galoshes big enough to wear with several pairs of socks for warmth.

My ankles are like that as well- I could do things as a kid that some people could not believe (I wish I could have run for longer periods and a bit faster- soccer would have been my sport). I don't remember ever twisting my ankle or anything like that (except maybe "twists" that were gone in a few minutes). Other joints are almost as flexible (when I bend my thumb back, some people protest that it turns their stomach).
Even with the flexible ankles, once I got the correct size shoes, the wear pattern evened out (and I also found I was more stable).
Good luck in the heels argument. IMO, this is a case where what YOU want should be dominant. After all, wearing heels or not is not a moral or ethical issue!!! And, if you harmed yourself for fashion's sake, it will be something you'd regret for a long time. |

| I think it's a matter of mom being sad cause she can't wear heels anymore cause of her back, so she wants to live vicariously through me. She keeps saying though that if I don't learn that I'll never make it as a singer. And somehow she thinks that by my wearing heels, and therefore occastionally a dress, she'll get me married off. And while wearing heels actually can improve the posture for singing, I don't want to fall down onstage. And I never want to marry. |
