The last remaining survivor of the Titanic plans to sell mementoes from the ship to pay her nursing home fees. Now 96, Millvina Dean was nine weeks old when the liner sank in the North Atlantic in 1912.
She hopes to raise £3,000 by selling items including a suitcase full of clothes given to her by the people of New York after her rescue. The auction in Wiltshire will also feature compensation letters sent to her mother by the Titanic Relief Fund.
Several rare prints of the Titanic - including one of it leaving the White Star dock in Southampton - will also go under the hammer. 'I am selling it all now because I have to pay these nursing home fees' Miss Dean moved into a private nursing home in Ashurst, Hampshire, two years ago.
She told the Southern Daily Echo: "I was hoping to be here for two weeks after breaking my hip, but I developed an infection and have been here for two years. I am not able to live in my home any more."
Miss Dean is the last survivor of the Titanic after Barbara Dainton, from Cornwall, died last year aged 96.
Thoughts?

Too bad there isn't a historical society out there that could raise the funds necessary to help her with her expenses.
At any rate, not to speak too harshly about nursing homes, but I wouldn't put any of my relatives into a nursing home. More than likely that is how she got the infection to begin with. Nursing homes are not the cleanest places in the world. |

| James Cameron should just pay for her care to say sorry for making that horrible movie. |

| That''s actually very sad, being the last Titanic survivor. She was a part of one of the most notorious tragedies in history. |

| Apparently David Gest has come forward and given her what she had been hoping to raise so she doesn't have to sell them! How sweet of him. |

| Yes, but this isn't just about one women. There are a lot of elderly in retirement homes that have pretty much lost everything. And they don't get too much respect either, they're treated as a liability and insurance companies pretty much dictate their lives. |

It is sad that someone like this, in the twilight of their years, has to worry about finding enough money, to be able to pay to be looked after.
Especially after being through such tragedy and loss. |

Correct. And when the insurance/etc. runs out, they end up on the streets. One of the growing groups among people who are homeless are elderly women. Many of them end up on the street in just that way.
I'm glad that someone cared enough about this to help out. That's encouraging. |
