Gordon Brown went into the telephone a deeply unpopular Prime Minister and emerged.... Super Wonk!
Everyone seems to be falling over themselves to praise the British model and even Wall Street, normally so anti-nationalisation, has adapted his cunning plan.
What deeply fascinating times we do live in, to be sure! |

Lets not get too excited,we are not out of the woods yet.The bank bail out could just be the tip of the Iceberg. There's every chance the Goverment ( i.e us the taxpayers) might have to pay out even more money to prop up the Economy.
Plus there's still the fact, that we might not see a penny back of the money given to the banks. |

In my mind, he's the Charles Shultz character from Peanuts who says things like, "Arrgh!" "Good Grief" and has a crush on the little red-haired girl.
One of my favorites is his remark about his dog. "Why can't I have a normal dog like all the other kids?".
Now, some may think this comparison is getting worn, or is not accurate. But who else with the last name of Brown is more beloved and familiar to the American public? I put him in good company and that's more than anyone else has done for a British Prime Minister, save Churchill.
You'll see Gordon Brown on T.V. soon. "It's The Great Pumpkin, Gordon Brown" Then , we'll see him on "Merry Christmas, Gordon Brown". But whatever you do, don't listen to Linus's speech on the spirit of Christmas because it's strewn with Christian values! [gasp in horror!!!] |

The vast majority of Americans were simply unaware of his existence.
Even President Bush called him "that fellow" at a press conference 18 months ago.Those who knew that one prime minister had been quietly replaced by another simply could not compute the departure of Blair - who remains immensely popular on the U.S side of the Pond - in the same way that America could not get its head around the defeat of Winston Churchill at the polls in 1945.
And the few who took a forensic interest in British politics would have been reading the same early obituaries of Mr Brown that had filled the newspapers at home.What a difference a week makes!

Dam straight! I wanna see Gordon Brown right up there backing up McCain when we take action to neutralize the iranian nuclear threat but if the Israelis feel they wanna do the job then the US and UK have to give them all the moral support we can. |

Brown disappoints me. His government's preferred share purchase plan to backstop the banks shifts the problem to another generation, just like the U.S. option. I expected a more responsible and accountable response from the leaders of Britain. Canada's response is equally reckless. We're sleepwalking through a crisis that's going to leave our children and their children paying for our sins.
Shame ... shame ... shame on the politicians and regulators that have allowed lenders get away with the mother of all frauds. And shame on us for falling for cheap money and living beyond our means because we were told it's OK .. everybody's doing it.

Brown and the Goverment have kept saying, we must rescue the British economy at "any cost".We have had 10 years of boom, and now has come the bust.As i have said before this could just be the tip of the iceburg compared to whats in store.When do we get to say, to our goverments stop using taxpayers money to bale out failing companies who get into a mess because they get greedy..?.They did not complain, when they were making huge profits, and paying out huge salaries to the corporate "fat cats".
This is part of what's got us in the current mess,the spend on credit now and let the future take care of itself, which is now catching up with us.We saw the "greed is good" 80's blown away in October 1987 when the markets crashed .Then again in 1992, and no lessons were learned? |

Well hopefully ( at least where the banks are concerned) now Taxpayers, supposedly own a majority share, we will have more say on what the money they make is actually spent on.There hopefully, will be more clarity and openess, and the bosses will have to be a lot more accountable, to the public.
But i get the feeling, none of this will really happen.Things will carry on pretty much as usual and how they always have done,there's always a loophole, or a clause hidden somewhere, in the small print. |
