How about a little pause for thought?
I usually teach French, but I have just started teaching General Studies to 16/17 year olds. I'm finding it scary as it's out of my comfort zone but stimulating as well.
Yesterday we were talking about "what is art?" We looked at a set of objective criteria for something to be considered great art. Things such as craftsmanship, originality, longevity, skill. A lad who hadn't opened his mouth in 3 weeks, put up his hand and asked if a great goal could be considered art. We looked at the goal Owen scored against Argentina (the perfect football goal against the perfect opposition!) and decided that it definitely could be considered art.
Is there anything you think could be considered art that isn't usually defined as such?

I usually find it difficult to draw the line between Skill & Art, dance has both as opposed to football/soccer, which is “an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively” hence, consider a "sport", not an art. Therefore, I disagree as football considered a form of art (IMO).

creativity finds many outlets.

ie. I'm a gardener. Not a horticulturist or botanist but a gardener.

I have 8 major gardens on my property. The latest is a water garden that my husband and I just spent 6 weeks to complete.

It's a 4 ft deep pond about 10 feet in diameter and has a waterfall. All the plants and rocks were found in fields and are indigenous to our region.

People who have seen it say that it looks like it has been there always.

Some have mentioned that it is a real place of serendipity.

To me... it's my art.

This glittering life-size statue of a contorted Kate Moss will light up the normally stuffy rooms of the British Museum in a new exhibition from tomorrow.

The £1.5million sculpture, called Siren, by artist Marc Quinn is perched among the more traditional Greek beauties in the Nereid Gallery.

And fans are expected to flock to the museum in London for a glimpse of Kate's 18-carat body, which is set to sell for £10million.
Not surprisingly, the 34-year-old model didn't pose like this for Marc, who described her as the "Aphrodite of her day". But he said: "She loved it. Kate thinks it lifts her into a mythic level."

For me, Art is something that people, should be able to see, appreciate and enjoy. Not something, that is just done for how much money the artist can make.Or something that will end up in a rich persons private collection, never to see the light of day for years and years.

In saying that, there are somethings that i don't really consider to be Art. Damian Hirst, who seems to spend his life, sticking dead animals, with their internal organs on display, in to a plastic tank , and people consider this to be Art..?.It must be to those that pay a fortune for these 'sculptures'.Hirst must be laughing all the way to the bank.

I suppose what is Art..?It is in the eye of the beholder.

That's exactly what we've been discussing. Can any response to art be wrong? Is it all in the eye of the beholder or is there a set of rules that need to be obeyed. Does it matter that you haven't been educated to "read" a piece of art if it awakes a response in you?
We're moving on to whether art can change people's lives or history and I'm going to bring in a print of Guernica.

Another thought,

I hear alot about a 'street artist' called Banksy.Apparently his work is well thought of and full of social and political comment ,but to a lot of people it is just graffiti, and vandalism.I wonder what the Art 'experts' who are more used to looking at Old Masters, make of this modern trend. From people like these, who defy the 'rules' of form and structure. That artists had to obey.I think back to people like Dali, who were for many years scorned for their ideas, that broke the mould, and give so many of todays artists the courage to do their thing.

You talk to kids and they've at least heard of Banksy and respect what he's done. He's taken art out of the galleries onto the street which is a terrific breath of fresh air!

Ancient cave paintings, and rock art work of the Aborigionals in Australia. Some of which are thousands of years old, some done in more recent times. There is also a spirituality, tradition, and mystery to a lot of these drawings.

Art, and history, combined.

Life itself can be art with depth and emotion and ever changing patterns of light and dark colors of every sort.

That's a good point, hadn't thought of that. I suppose it counts in that a life can cause a reaction in those around it, it is original, wish it had more longevity though!

Ah, but some can live still when they're gone. Charles Shultz, Stan Lee, Walt Disney, Bruce Lee, John Wayne, John Lennon, Marilyn Monroe, John F Kennedy, etc, etc, etc. They were all artists in a sense. And what they left behind won't be forgotten.
