A group of retired Gurkhas fighting for the right to settle in Britain have won their immigration test case at London's High Court.

They were challenging immigration rules which said that those who retired from the British Army before 1997 did not have an automatic right to stay. Prominent supporter actress Joanna Lumley said it was a "chance to right a great wrong". The judge, Mr Justice Blake, said the Gurkhas' long service, conspicuous acts of bravery and loyalty to the Crown all pointed to a "moral debt of honour" and gratitude felt by British people

The government said it would now review all Gurkhas' cases. Gurkhas have been part of the British Army for almost 200 years and are hand picked from a fiercely contested recruitment contest in Nepal to win the right to join.

They have seen combat all over the world, with 200,000 fighting in the two world wars.

Yes but there is still a long way to go for the Gurkhas.

It was an insult to them when so many others got the right to stay here, for extremely weak reasons !!

I agree with Greenchick, it's about time !!

This is very good news. They've been fierce fighters for centuries and a huge asset to UK colonial forces.

Way to go "Patsy"

P.S. She was born in Kashmir, India.

I LOVE Joanna !!! and her acts for Human Rights !!!
One doesn't think of the Royal Army of the UK without the Brigade of Gurkhas...at least I don't...I had no idea they weren't already considered as citizens and allowed the same rights. Seems every Country has their skeletons in the closet to bear.....

My father served in the India-Burma-China theater
of operations in WWII and has told me stories
of these Gurkhas.

Upon seeing this thread, I asked him again, and he
couldn't remember.

I'm starting to get angry, not at him, but at the Alz.
