I've heard different rumours circulating that a sequel to "Superman Returns" is being planned and that Brandon Routh will once more be cast in the role. Have the Producers learned nothing from their previous Box Office flop which wasn't surprising as Routh was poor in the role and the story was weak? Smallville is hugely popular with Superman fans and it is generally accepted that Tom Welling, NOT Brandon Routh is looked on as the late great Christopher Reeve's successor in the role. Chris said as much himself that Tom was "His natural heir" and gave Smallville his own personal seal of approval by guest starring in the series.

Surely it is now time for Tom to be given his chance to portray Superman on the big screen, although I think it would be better as a Justice League movie incorporating the casts of the Smallville and Batman franchises, plus a few more actors and actresses to fill the roles of Justice League characters who have not yet appeared in Smallville.

my suggested cast would be:

Bruce Wayne/Batman - Christian Bale
Clark Kent/Superman - Tom Welling
Diana Prince/Wonder Woman - Megan Fox
J'onn/The Martian Manhunter - Phil Morris
Hawkgirl - Kira knightly
John Richards/The Green Lantern - J. August Richards
Kara-El/Supergirl - Laura Vandervoort
Oliver Queen/The Green Arrow - Justin Hartley
Dinah Lance/The Black Canary - Alaina Huffman
Bart Allen/The Flash - Kyle Gallner
Arthur "AC" Curry/Aquaman - Alan Ritchson
Victor Stone/Cyborg - Lee Thompson Young
Lex Luthor - Michael Rosenbaum
Alfred - Michael Caine

It just requires the right Producers and writers to make this a fantastic movie and a box Office smash.

Not forgetting Erica Durance as Lois Lane, Aaron Ashmore as Jimmy Olsen and Michael McKean as Perry White.

Neither. The voice of Bud Collier as both the Fleischer and Filmation`s animated Superman and of course George Reeves.

I enjoyed Superman Returns. Routh was never going to suceed because he had to follow Christopher Reeve, and I doubt anyone could pull that off. Welling didn't have that problem, he only had to follow Jeff East (yes, I had to look that up) who played young CK in the first Reeve movie.

Routh did a great job of playing Chris Reeve playing Superman but there was nothing original in the portrayal of Superman, its time Welling got to wear the cape and learn to fly. Smallville has been a brilliant series and any series that lasts 8 years has to be good. Don't forget Chloe

Good point about Chloe, she could probably be the communications chief at the JL's orbital Watchtower.

Thanks for the interesting comments folks. I remember when "Superman Returns" came out, I wasn't even tempted to go to the cinema to see it as I was convinced that only Tom Welling could come even close to matching Chris Reeve's portrayal of Superman although Chris was an almost impossible act to follow. I think it was breathtaking arrogance therefore on Producer Bryan Singer's part to cast anyone else in the role. Smallville has got such a solid fanbase and as ASB says has been a brilliant series and any series that lasts 8 years has to be good, so utilising it's cast for a big screen outing would I am convinced have been a Box Office success. Maybe if Mr. Singer had canvassed opinion from Superman fans about this, then he wouldn't have ended up with a turkey.

My brother-in-law actually bought me the DVD of "Superman Returns" as he said he enjoyed the film and I thought it was only fair to watch it on the television to compare not only Routh and Welling's performances as Superman, but also Kevin Spacey and Michael Rosenbaum's performances as Lex Luthor. I was so bored with the film however that I fell asleep half way through watching it, but from what I did see, Spacey's Luthor was more pantomine villain, although to be fair, I also thought that Gene Hackman's Luthor was too slap-stick and was one of only a few minor weaknesses in the Reeve Superman films. Michael Rosenbaum on the other hand to me has proved to be the best Lex Luthoryet, portraying him with the real menace associated with the character in the comic books, as a borderline pyschopath. Smallville will definitely be a little poorer for Michael's abscence in season 8.

There is a rumour that this may well be Smallville's final season and that hopefully at it's conclusion we will finally see Tom Welling put on the Superman costume and take to the skies. One other rumour I have heard and certainly hope is true is that a new series called "Metropolis" will succeed it and will see Tom as Superman with Erica Durance as Lois Lane. I certainly hope this comes to fruition as I am sure it would be a far superior Superman series to the cheesy Dean Cain/Teri Hatcher "The new Adventures of Superman".

There is a statement on the Smallville Kryptonsite BWW, but it didn't elaborate on Michael's reasons for leaving.

In news that we regret to share, it seems that Michael Rosenbaum's 7-year run as Lex Luthor on Smallville will be coming to an end.

Smallville Executive Producers Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson; The CW Network; and Warner Bros. Television have released a joint statement regarding Michael Rosenbaum’s departure from the show:

“It has been an honor and pleasure to work with Michael for the past seven seasons. He is one of the best actors on television and has never failed to bring a new layer to the character of Lex Luthor in every episode. While Michael won’t be a series regular and we won’t have the pleasure of working with him on a weekly basis this fall, we like to think that we haven’t seen the last of Lex Luthor. Stay tuned."
