VERMONT -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow's milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman.
"PETA's request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow's milk in the food he serves," the statement says.
PETA officials say a move to human breast milk would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health.
"The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn't make sense," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Everyone knows that 'the breast is best,' so Ben & Jerry's could do consumers and cows a big favor by making the switch to breast milk."

So, anyone for a new flavor of Ben & Jerry's?? |

| It`s bughouse that`s all, just plain bughouse. They say it does not make sense for people to consume milk from a cow. Just when did it all of a sudden stop making sense????? Somehow I just can`t get use to the idea of pouring breast milk on my cereal or having a mug of cold breast milk with my oreo cookies. |

Dang, Morgram, but now I just have this mental image of a guy sitting there with his nice cold glass of breast milk and Oreo cookies, just kind of staring at it......
I don't know how I'd feel about eating the ice cream. I'd be willing to try it, but I'd feel kind of funny eating it, although I'm not really sure why. I know it's healthier for humans than cow milk, but I guess I've just been conditioned to feel a bit funny about it. |

LOL... right, I'd rather have my ice cream with milk made from bovine hormone additives than the "additives" we might find in human breast milk...
|Humans have the worst diet of all. sheesh. Last thing I need is to consume a product that may have come from a crack addict selling milk for more recreational pharmaceuticals... yeesh.
Besides, cows like being milk. Just like humans, a full breast of milk is rather uncomfortable. |

I think its a great idea! Were the only mammal that drink another mammals milk... Milk is Poison if you really look at the following:
The Risks of Cow's Milk
* "Bleeding from the intestines during infancy
The intestines of some babies may bleed if they drink cow's milk during their first year of life. This slow leakage of blood from the lining of the intestine can cause iron deficiency anemia. For this reason, pediatricians no longer recommend giving cow's milk to children during their first year of life.
* Food allergies
About 1% of children are allergic to the protein in cow's milk. When they eat or drink milk products, they may develop hives, diarrhea, wheezing, or other allergic symptoms. These children need to avoid cow's milk products.
* Lactose intolerance
Lactose is the sugar found in milk. Some children and many adults have a condition called lactose intolerance and have bloating and diarrhea when they eat or drink milk products. You can prevent these symptoms by adding lactase drops to the milk. (Lactase is an enzyme that helps people digest the sugar in milk.)
* Heart disease
Children with strong family risk factors for early heart attacks should avoid cow's milk products because of the high amounts of cholesterol and saturated fat in milk. You can reduce this risk by giving your child skim milk or 1% milk.
* Diabetes
One study has suggested that a reaction to the protein in cow's milk could trigger the onset of diabetes mellitus. A later study showed no correlation. This theory is not a reason to give up milk."

PS: Those of you that have breast fed your babies KNOW that everything you consume goes right to baby. like coliflower ... my doctor told me to avoid eating gaseous foods in order to reduce my baby's colic.
on the list was: corn, legumes (beans), colifower, brocolli, and eggs among others.
Also, avoid caffeines (incl. chocolate), seafood (could start allergic reactions) and refined sugars (cereals).
So... think about all the stuff we eat that affects the quality of breast milk and you have a recipe for disaster.
Pasteurized breast milk? yeah right, another LOL.
and finally, breast milk is for babies...
and finally again, should we ban breast milk from China? Would it contain melamine?
PETA needs to concentrate on those animals that are abused, not pampered cows that have the attention of their farmers, their vets, government inspections and visiting school kids. Cows are sacred in some parts of this world and eat better than their owners!
Puppy farms, cock fighting, uncared for zoo animals and other working animals need their attention, not fat cows. |

good grief.
I don't know anyone that does. That's why baby formula exists. Doctors always warm pregnant women not to feed cow's milk to babies. Doesn't everyone know this in the modern world? Well, I guess men don't visit obstetricians very much.

So, Debb, I take it you will not be ordering the breast milk sundae?
I asked my son if he would mind drinking breast milk, and he had the same reaction that I did; that it would feel kind of funny, although he wasn't sure why.
He did mention that he was getting the mental image of a room full of topless women waiting for the milking machine (come on, Doc, you got the same image.... ), and I don't think it bothered him too much..... |

| It's PETA, they're not worth listening to. They're a bunch of hypocrites and liars. |

| If that happened we would have to stop the stigma of breasts being naughty. The containers would have to have pictures of perfect natural ones on them. Bare! And the superbowl halftime show would have mandatory toplessness. So that kids can see them. They are not bad, they are good! Thats why it will never happen. |

Real or not, I can tell you that ice cream has been one of my downfalls while trying to loose weight. With the thought of human milk in icecream, I have now taken ice cream completely off my dietary list.
At least until, I do a thorough reading of the ingredients on the box. |

sorry my milk factory dried up 12 years ago after Sammy was born and she had em for 2 years.....
i agree that breast milk is good for babies but the canned milk isn't that great either sometimes.
And I'd be a bit wary too of who's volunteering and who's been taking what during their life time and what else would be in that human milk...
PETA imho needs to get a life..lliterally.....

I like PETA. not everything they do. but they have good intent.
Afterall, it is because of them that the wearing of fur coats is now politically incorrect. I agree with them there.
Since you can't outright ban the wearing of fur coats, political incorrectness works just as well.
Same for smoking. |
