What a wonderful story....the bravest ones are always the quietest ones, aren't they!
Strange thing, Dunkirk. Obviously it was the result of a failure but the operation itself wasn't a failure as it saved such huge numbers of soldiers from becoming prisoners of war. The fact that an appeal was launched and so many individuals sailed away from the coast of England into a war zone with no thought for their own safety to rescue the stranded soldiers came to symbolise an aspect of the British character that refuses to give up and is best under adversity. Of course, it is resorted to much too often now!

I am not sure who called it a failure. Perhaps things didn't go as planned, but the fact is, level heads, quick thinking, and a whole lot of courage and fortitude turned a bad situation into a chance for survival. I would venture to guess that any of those soldiers whose lives were saved from death or capture, would certainly not call the incident at Dunkirk a failure.

Dunkirk reminds me of Apollo 13.

A successful failure Cool

"Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous states have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender."

I have such mixed feelings about Churchill. I can't deny that my blood flows quicker when I read or hear his speeches but at the same time I am never prouder of my country than when we voted him out in '45. To be able to ditch such a charismatic leader showed the maturity of our democracy, in my opinion. After all, he had never shown himself to be on the side of the common man and the common man did not trust him to build a home fit for heroes.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man and with the gift of hindsight obviously he was right all during the thirties, but his earlier life did not really lead his contempories to trust him without reservation!
I picked up his History of the Second World War in a charity shop recently and read the first volume. His voice resonates through his prose so much, it's like listening to a speech!
Trouble is as well is that his image has been hijacked by the very sorts of people he fought so hard against!

Enoch and his Infamous "Rivers Of Blood " speech, in 1968, certainly didn't do the Torys any favours.
