George Michael has been arrested in public toilets for possession of drugs, according to a Sunday paper.A spokesman for the Met Police said: "I can confirm that a 45-year-old man was arrested on September 19 on suspicion of possession of drugs in the Hampstead Heath area."

He added: "He was taken to a north London police station where he received a caution for possession of class A and class C drugs."

George Michael has enjoyed one of the most successful and enduring careers in the music business. He has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, with seven US number-one singles, 11 number-one British singles and six number-one albums.

But behind the commercial success the singer's private life has not always run smoothly. He spent years refusing to comment on his sexuality but in 1998 was forced to "come out" after being arrested in public toilets in Beverly Hills, California, for engaging in a lewd act.

I wonder what it is with some celebrities, that the money and fame, just are not enough. Why is it that some of them, seem to have this urge to "self destruct",and throw their career and life, down the pan.Is it because they have deep seated insecurity?,is it a genuine cry for help,do they have real problems?.

Or is it just the typical, sex drugs and booze, lifestyle some celebs just can't seem to break out of, (or don't want to). Should we feel sorry for them, and watch them get away with a 'telling off' and a few weeks 'punishment' in re-hab ?when they break the law, just for them to come out, and keep doing the same thing.

Thoughts..?

I think it's all of the above because of behavioral problems and bad habits that they've adopted and can't seem to get away from. I feel sorry for them, but at the same time they're "responsible" adults, accountable for their own actions, they should seek treatment for their addictions.

This is only my own views on the subject.

I believe that anyone who works in the public eye and has to maintain a certain professional image has GOT TO HAVE a spiritual advisor. What I mean is, a person has got to be well grounded in him/her/self and not allow him/her/self to get lost in the image.

A person has got to be able to "loosen the bow" so to speak in order to relax and just be themselves. If they are so used to being a "good guy" in public, then they may be tempted to walk on the "bad guy" side just to do something different and to distinguish themselves from their public image.

It is not just celebrities either. How many times have we heard of the "nice, quiet, never late to work or never complain" model employee who suddenly goes bizerk and kills his family or shoots up an office full of employees?

I would write more, but I need to get back to work.

Later,

I second Sue's comments!!!

Not only do I see pressure to maintain a public mask, but also, in some cases we find out that the person's life was hell on earth some time before they became famous.

In such cases- if the damage done isn't dealt with, maybe they're self-medicating? Acting out the consequences of the damage?

And regarding the guy "who came out"... a friend of mine hid his sexuality for many years. After he came out, he became a lot more calm and serene- noticeably so! I've had talks with LGBT colleagues and friends about (in a case connected with research I'd done) men who solicit sex at rest areas. They said that the shame placed on them for their sexuality and the pressure of hiding it generally warped them into doing things they wouldn't normally do. It was the stress of hiding and repressing their sexuality that caused them to act out in dangerous and (to my LGBT friends) rather stupid ways.

The pressure on people to hide things that others consider unacceptable is extreme- and not always right. Again, the "public mask".

Our tabloid press are low-lifes. I have no particular feeling one way or another toward George Michael but the way someof our 'newspapers' carry on is pathetic.

Last week a tabloid journalist turned radio broadcaster named Mike Parry was talking about Nick Faldo. He told a story of how Faldo was having a house built back in the 80's and he (Parry) and his photographer turned up to take pictures. The next day, after they'd printed the pictures, Faldo's house became a tourist attraction. Faldo contacted him and said that his children were being hassled by crowds and couldn't leave the house. Parry was actually defending his position and couldn't believe he'd done anything wrong.

It's not always the tabloids either. I remember year ago, Burt Reynolds was in the process of purchasing a home in Winter Haven, Florida. Of course, it was supposed to be kept private. Somehow, it got leaked out and the local newspaper ran a story on it. Needless to say, the deal fell through.

I totally agree.
