BOLIVAR PENINSULA, Texas - Many years from now, a small group of Hurricane Ike survivors will probably still be telling the story of how, on the night the storm flattened their island, they took sanctuary in a church — with a lion.

So far, I haven't heard how it turned out, and how the lion fared. I hope that the police didn't do something stupid like shooting it.

People can be so dumb when it comes to animals. Imagine, people in a panic because a little kitten investigates them? Or killing a snake because it's in their yard? (I could see killing a poisonous snake that was a threat to your pets or family, but NOT a harmless king snake or something like that!)

As for "big cats"- I've always wanted to make friends with one. I doubt that would ever happen, however.

I am sure that the lion was well cared for. I would imagine the National Guardsmen gave the lion and owner plenty of room.
