And it's only 7:50.....
The kids got up this morning to get ready for school, and noticed that one of our daschunds couldn't walk very well. Mel, the maniac, must of slipped a disk overnight, and is having trouble getting around. I called the emergency vet number, and we are going in first thing. He doesn't seem to be in too much pain, but what a way to start off the week. Of course the kids wanted to ditch school, but I got them all out to the buses anyway. I don't need a crowd around here.
I've cancelled my schedule for today, I'm going to be house bound dog watching. I think I'm going to ask the vet for doggie-downers, Mel seems to get more active and insane with age.....
Wish me luck. |

what a morning indeed!!
I hope Mel is going to be ok and I hope that things will be found out what is going on with him.
I pray that it is nothing serious.
Please let us know what is happening if you can.

Well, it's a little after 10 and I just got back, minus dog. Mel has to stay in the hospital for the next two days, confined with IV steroids and cathetered. Little guy did some damage to his spine and the Dr. thought it best if they kept him, and so did I. With the kids, the other dog and the cats around here it would be pretty hard to keep Mel calm and confined in this place. And getting that dog to take meds, forget it.
The vet seems to think he'll be fine after all the treatments though, which is a great relief. Unfortunately, my bank account won't be. The estimated bill they gave me is close to $1,000.00! I guess that's the price ya gotta pay when you choose to love your animals......
You right Greenchick, it's got to get better! |

Yes you can but it is exspensive and some t imes not even worth it as it covers only surgeries and certain illnesses like cancer...even the premiums can be high...Up to $25.00 a mo per pet...
glad to hear Steve that Mel is getting tratment andI agree with you and the Vet...he will probably get better care and a faster recovery at the animal hospital than at your home.
But that was a honking big bill he gave you....will he take payments?

Just got the update from the vet, he's doing OK. They gave him a sedative, so he's sleeping. At least he hasn't bit or tried to bite anyone.
As for the pet insurance, Diana is right, it's very expensive, and for dogs with predispositions to certain things, such as dachshunds with back problems, I don't think it covers. Besides, my guys are already 9, so I don't think they would be eligible. If they were, I can't imagine what the premiums would be.
As for the rest of the bill, I'm not worried about paying it, it's just a huge amount that I wasn't expecting right now. I still have most of the severence money I got from Newsweek, so I'll just pay it off when I go to get him on Wednesday. It's just that I was hoping not to have to touch that money until Mary started college in 2 years.
Danny is lost without his brother. He's moving around here looking everywhere. They're never apart, haven't been since the day they were born. I bought them together from the breeder, since they were 12 weeks old at the time and so attached to each other that she was going to keep them unless someone was willing to take both of them together. Definitely a package deal. Ying & Yang
I guess I'm going to have to let him sleep with Bridget tonight, otherwise I'll be up all night with howling....
So that's where we are right now, I'll let you know.
Thanks for all the kind words. |

Glad to hear things are going well with Mel, and will pray for poor Danny to not have a howling/singing session tonight while your trying to sleep.
The premiums for my 4 carpetsharks would of been $41.00 EACH per month since they are exotics and they all have predispositioned problems, .....Bandit has insulemia and so does Smokie, Smokie has weight and muscle loss due to accidental poisoning, and Lily Possum has a problem with her neck and back due to being so small.BEary has digestive problems and is overweight .
Steve i will be on the IM tonight about 7 pm if your on.

I'll try to be on IM, but at the moment, Alice and I are making blueberry muffins for her to take to school tomorrow. It's her B-day, so we are making a ton of them for her classes..... |

Been there done that with one of my dogs. My little guy (a Lhasa) bounced back remarkably well, so here's hoping your dog has the same great outcome.
