Joan Winston was one of the organizers of the early Trek conventions. Her books "Star Trek Lives" and "The Making of the Trek Conventions" are classics. She was also a key source on Bill's book "Get A Life."

There's an obituary at TrekMovie.

Here's one of the posted replies that sums things up pretty well IMO:

We owe much to the original generation of fans, best personified in Joannie Winston.

I fully expect that in historical terms Trek’s notable impact won’t be the show itself as much as the cultural phenomena and possibilities it engendered. The true legacy of Star Trek will be the empowerment of fandom.

The fact that you can find the word Trekkie in the dictionary is owed as much to Joannie Winston as Gene Roddenberry.

Sad

May God be with her family and comfort them...may He give them peace....

I read both her books over and over and they were great books!! I think every Trek person onthe planet has read those two classic books.

God rest her soul.

Sorry to hear this news. She was a good friend to our convention and gave us invaluable advice in the early days, when we were still ignorant of all the hard work involved but desparate for all things Trek.

I will pass the news on to fellow Midcon organisers.
